OBITUARY

Carolyn Weng

August 5, 1929September 14, 2019

Carolyn Weng, artist and teacher, passed away at Heritage Center on September 14, 2019, shortly after her 90th birthday. She was born in Louisville, Kentucky, her parents having been Cratie and Carlos Williams.

Shapes and colors permeated Carolyn's life. She had a natural talent and interest in all aspects of art. She graduated in Georgetown College in 1952 and got her master's degree the University of Louisville in 1958, where she received the Hite Art Scholarship. She has shown her work in 5 states, in juried and solo shows, and has won many awards.

Carolyn also was a dedicated teacher of art inspiring many students during her 40 year career. She taught in several schools in Kentucky before starting the art program at Oakland City University. She developed an art major there and instituted a Gallery Program. She was rewarded teacher of the year in 1974. Carolyn taught at Princeton Community High School from 1974 until 1992.

She was married to Siegfried Weng, who had been the Director of the Dayton Museum of Art and the Evansville Art Museum. From 1996 to 2008 their mutual love and interests made a delightful interlude in their lives. They both have been outstanding and prolific artists in their own careers.

Carolyn is survived by her sister, Willa Fae Williams, who is a teacher and pastor in Kentucky; and second cousin, Jana Thornton.

The Weng Scholarship at USI honors the legacy of the dynamic couple who has given much financial help to art students in southwestern Indiana.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:15 a.m. Thursday, September 19, 2019, at Alexander Newburgh Chapel officiated by Rev. Willa Fae Williams with burial at Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, Kentucky with family. Friends may visit 9:00 a.m. until service time on Thursday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the art department at Oakland City University.

Mrs Weng or as I knew her , Mrs. Browning was my Art teacher from 1976 to 1980 at Princeton Community High School. I was Vice President of the Art Club and have wonderful memories of trips to the Indianapolis Art Museum and the Christmas Parties she hosted for us at her home in Oakland City. . She was gracious, encouraging and talented woman. So sorry for your loss. Prayers for Comfort and Peace.
