Charles Allen Porter (“Charlie”) of Newburgh, Indiana passed away on September 29, 2026, at the age of 85. Charlie was born on June 17, 1941, in Evansville, IN, to Arthur and Ilyne Porter. Charlie had one older sister, Patricia (Perigo), who predeceased him. As a young boy in Evansville, and mostly teaching himself, Charlie developed what became a lifetime interest in hunting, fishing and the outdoors.
Charlie graduated from Bosse High School and met Sandra Lou Bolander (“Sandy”) at a boat festival in Evansville – Charlie was racing boats and Sandy was a contestant in the queen festival contest. The couple married in 1960, and they had five children.
Charlie had a fulfilling career in sales, starting at the original Gus Doerner’s Sporting Goods in downtown Evansville, then Peter Healy, and finally as sales leader for decades at Peerless Pottery, a family-owned company located in Rockport, IN. Charlie, with Sandy as his companion at times, often traveled for work and met wonderful colleagues who became lifelong friends.
Charlie loved hunting and fishing with his two boys, Monty and Nick, and had a multitude of colorful friends who became regulars in the Porter household. Thanks to Charlie’s skills, family and friends enjoyed countless fish fries at the Porter home. Spring and summer were all about the best fishing spot, and during the colder months Charlie enjoyed dove, deer and duck hunting. He traveled to Canada, the western US, the southern US, and even Argentina, for hunting and fishing. In his later years, Charlie enjoyed spending time at the Highground Hunting Club near Henderson, KY, where he hunted ducks but (we think) mostly enjoyed talking with old and new friends.
Charlie and Sandy always had a dog, and Charlie preferred Golden Retrievers over labs for hunting, which was a topic of some debate among his friends. Charlie could talk to anyone about anything, and his blue eyes and friendly smile warmed everyone’s heart.
Charlie was preceded in death by just weeks by his loving wife, Sandy. He is survived by his five children, L. Montogomery Porter (Susan), Keely J. Porter (Kim), Natalie K. Colvin (Tim), Nicholas A. Porter (Lara, deceased), and E. Paige Freitag (Christian); and seven grandchildren, Katherine J. Rosin (Eric), Nicholas C. Colvin (Laci), Samuel M. Porter, Leslie A. Porter (Hannah), Jessica N. Porter, Samuel Pfender and Danielle Pfender.
The family would like to thank Visiting Angels and Heart to Heart Hospice of Evansville for the care and compassion they showed both Charlie and Sandy and the family over the past few months.
No service is planned at this time. The family will have a private celebration of life at a later date. Memorial donations may be sent to: Indiana Ducks Unlimited or Heart to Heart Hospice Foundation.
