OBITUARY

Gary D. Hutton

November 30, 1956May 19, 2012

Gary Donald Hutton, 55, of Newburgh, passed away Saturday, May 19, 2012, at Deaconess Gateway Hospital after a courageous battle with brain cancer. He was born to Karen and Bill Hutton on November 30, 1956, in Wilmington, Delaware.

Formerly from Wilmington, Gary lived in Baton Rouge, Louisiana before relocating to the Evansville-Newburgh area in 1984. In 1984, he married his wife of 27 years, Lisa Ryan-Hutton and they have one daughter, Jennifer Ryan Hutton.

Gary graduated from John Dickinson High School in Wilmington, Delaware. While in high school he participated in wrestling and ran cross-country track. He completed his Bachelors of Science degree in Wildlife and Fishery at Virginia Polytechnic Institute where he was a member of the Xi Sigma Pi fraternity. He earned his Master’s degree in Applied Statistics and Master’s of Science in Wildlife and Fishery from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

As a marine biologist, Gary worked for both the Delaware and Louisiana State Wildlife and Fisheries departments. In 1984, he accepted a job with Bristol Meyers as a bio-statistician working on clinical drug trials. After seven years with BMS in Evansville, Gary started his own statistical consulting business, Statistical Associates, which he owned and operated until his retirement in 2006.

Gary was an avid gardener and boater, and was passionate about his books. He enjoyed cooking and was infamous for his black bean salsa and shumai. He was a member of the Sir Brit car club and enjoyed working on his Spitfire car. He also enjoyed collecting antiques, particularly cut glass. He was known as the “neighborhood mayor” and was always working on behalf of his neighbors to better our community and the lives of others; he was always willing to lend a helping hand. He had a passion for life and believed that learning was a continuous life journey of questioning. One of his favorite sayings was, “Don’t believe everything you think.”

He was an alumnus of Leadership Evansville. He served for a number of years and was currently chairing the community scholarship committee for the Warrick Community Foundation. He was a spiritual man and was a prior member of the local Buddha Sanga.

Gary is survived by his wife, Lisa Ryan-Hutton; daughter, Jennifer, both of Newburgh; mother and father, Bill and Karen Hutton of Wilmington, Delaware; sister, Linda and her husband, George Skelly, of Lancaster, Pennsylvania; in-laws, Bob and Wanda Ryan of Buffalo Grove, Illinois and Carrie and Ricci Washburn of Columbus, Ohio; nieces and nephews, Patrick, Alexandra, Austin and Kacie; and aunts, uncles and cousins.

Gary has requested that a private Celebration of Life be held for close friends and family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made on behalf of Gary Hutton to the Warrick County Community Foundation, 224 W. Main Street, PO Box 215, Boonville, IN 47601, 812-897-2030, www.warrickcommunityfoundation.org. Condolences may be made online at www.AlexanderNewburghChapel.com.

So sorry to hear this news. We met Gary at the Newburgh British car show a few years back and he helped with a problem we were having with our Spitfire. That same day, he gave a young GT6 owner a door for his car. Really a nice guy. We will keep your family in our prayers.

Dear, dear Karen and Billy, With great sadness I read last night of the passing of Gary in the Delawareonline. I had not looked at the obituaries for several days but I seemed to have a strong feeling to do so even though it was getting late. So very, very sorry. Love Lois and Chet
