Helen graduated from Newburgh High School in 1933, where she played basketball. She was a member of First Christian Church of Newburgh, former member of Eastern Star, Oak Grove Homemakers and Sewing Circle. She enjoyed reading, fishing, crocheting, knitting, making angel wraps, being in Florida and spending time with all of her grandchildren. Helen was a quilter and her beautiful homemade creations are treasured by her children and grandchildren, all of whom received quilts made especially for them. She was a homemaker and worked at Republic Aviation during WWII.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Clara Uhde Carter; father, James Carter; stepmother, Edith Carter; brother, Leo Carter; and husband of 60 years, Almond Akin.
Helen is survived by her daughters, Gayle (Woody) Winstead and Nancy Buchanan of Newburgh; son, Gary (Nikki) of Houston, TX; ten grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Services were 10:00 AM Thursday, February 11, 2010, at Alexander Newburgh Chapel, 5333 State Road 261, officiated by Rev. Mike Claypool with burial at Rose Hill Cemetery. Friends visited Wednesday from 4:00 to 8:00 PM and Thursday from 9:00 AM until service time at the funeral home.
