Howard was born on February 1st, 1956 in Alpena, Ml. He graduated in 1974 from Alpena High School where he excelled academically and athletically and was inducted into Alpena’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004. He continued his passion for football and hockey at Western Michigan University and received his Bachelor of Science in Geology in 1978 where he was later inducted into the Western Michigan Distinguished Alumni and Geological Hall of Fame. He was a three-year letter winner in football at WMU, captain of the team, All-Mid American Linebacker and recipient of the President’s Award for Leadership his senior season. While at WMU he married the love of his life and high school sweetheart and after college, they planted their roots in Newburgh, Indiana.
He was a devoted husband, a loving father, a fiercely loyal friend, and was always willing to help someone in need. If there was a way, he would find it, plan it and get it done. He was passionate about his family, work, and community. Howard was a brilliant entrepreneur that worked hard to create many successful businesses. He was highly involved in numerous local and state oil and gas associations and was inducted into the INOGA Hall of Fame. A strong work ethic and a never-quit attitude was the fabric of who he was in his personal and professional life.
Howard greatly impacted the Warrick & Vanderburgh County communities. He devoted many hours to local organizations and was on the board of directors for the Boys & Girls Club, Redevelopment Commission, Economic Development for Southwest Indiana, Golf Gives Back and Warrick Trails. The Boys & Girls Club held a special place in his heart because it was his safe haven as a child. Warrick Trails was the most recent example of his love and dedication for our community. He poured endless hours and overcame many hurdles to create a beautiful space for the community to not only exercise but to bring people together. Everything Howard did was to improve the quality of life for others, whether community, work, or family. Ingenuity, compassion, and perseverance were who he was. He came to the aid of others without ever desiring anything in return. His life made a lasting impact on everyone who crossed his path.
He was preceded in death by his father, Glen Nevins; and his nephew Chris McNaughton
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Cindy Nevins; his 2 daughters, Breann Ellis (Curtis) and Courtney TenBarge (Clint); his 5 grandchildren Jackson, Harper, Blake, Brooklyn, and Henley; his mother Darlene Yarch; his sisters, Cathy Nevins, Maryette Cripps (Steve), Brenda Morey (Mike), and Kelli Banstra; numerous nieces and nephews and friends.
