Jim was born in Evansville, Indiana on October 4, 1933 to the late Bossie and Vivian (Kinder) Hood. He graduated from Evansville Central High School 1951. He attended Evansville College and played baseball for the Purple Aces, where he was named to the Indiana Collegiate Conference All-Star team as a pitcher. After two years at Evansville College, he went to serve his country in the United States Army, later returning to complete his degree in business administration. He worked at various financial and insurance companies throughout his career. He retired from Allstate Insurance Company as a bodily claim adjustor.
Throughout his life Jim enjoyed spending quality time with his beloved wife of 58 years, Mary Emma, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He also enjoyed bowling in the Tuesday night league at Arc Lanes with Mary Emma and friends for 25 plus years. Jim’s other hobbies included playing church league softball/basketball and table tennis where he was the 1957 Evansville College champion. He could always be seen at the baseball and softball fields watching his children and grandchildren play the game he loved. Jim was a member of Oak Hill Bible Fellowship for over 60 years and served as a deacon. Jim was an avid Aces fan where he had season tickets to the men's basketball games which he attended with Mary Emma and friends. In retirement, he enjoyed traveling with his wife and close friends around the country. They spent many evenings walking around the block, visiting with everyone he saw. He never met a stranger. If you have the privilege of knowing Jim, you knew he always had a way of making you feel special and loved. Jim was a kind caring man who always put others above himself. His selfless acts made him a great role model to many.
