

Joan was born on March 1, 1941, in Wyckoff, New Jersey, to John and Doris (Powers) Piekema. Following her graduation from Ramapo High School, Joan graduated with honors in 1963 from Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania. She received her Master of Science Degree in Counseling from the University of Evansville in 1989. Joan was a case coordinator for CASA in Vanderburgh County, worked as a counselor and school teacher, and was also a librarian at Sharon Elementary School in Newburgh.
Joan was a master gardener, artist and seamstress. She enjoyed reading, music, gardening, cross stitching, sewing, family history, and summer vacations in Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, R. Andrew Byers; sons, David A. Byers and Douglas J. Byers; triplet grandchildren, Abby Byers, Hannah Byers, and Brendan Byers; sister, Nancy P. Mathiews (David); sister-in-law, Barbara M. Stout; and two nieces and a nephew.
A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 13, 2025, at Alexander Newburgh Chapel, 5333 State Road 261, Newburgh, IN. Family and friends may visit from 1:00 p.m. until service time on Thursday at the funeral home.
