Laverne dedicated 18 years of service to Whirlpool before retiring in 2010, honored as a Lifetime Associate. She was known for her strong work ethic and caring spirit, but her greatest joy came from the simple pleasures of life and the people she loved. She enjoyed crocheting, gardening, rescuing dogs, bird watching, taking day trips with her sisters, and, above all, spending time with her family.
She is survived by her brothers, Bob (Marilyn) and Jerry (Brenda) Mossberger; her two sons, John (Gwen) Whalen and Anthony (Kayla) O’Neal; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and several beloved nieces and nephews.
Laverne was preceded in death by her daughter, Samera Whalen; a grandson; her parents, Melvin and Ida Mossberger; her brothers, Mel (Judy), Ronald, David (Ida); and her sisters, Cinda (Ottie) Hale, Betty Brown, Karen (Benny) Scott, and Darlene Young.
Laverne’s love, kindness, and devotion to her family will be remembered by all who knew her. Her legacy lives on through the generations she cherished and the countless memories shared with those she held dear.
A celebration of life visitation will be held at Alexander Newburgh Chapel, 5333 State Road 261, on Saturday, June 20, 2026 from 2:00 to 5:00PM. Her final resting place will be in Yankeetown at Bates Hill Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to gather in celebration of Laverne’s life and to honor the lasting impact she had on everyone that fortunate enough to know her.
