Born on March 24, 1941 in Evansville, Indiana, Mike was the son of Hazel Werling and stepson of Ken Werling, who predeceased him.
Mike is survived by his son, Eric Grismore (Candi), and stepdaughters, Lisa Riley (Carey), Cheryl Greer Reels and Sonya Sloan. He is also survived by grandchildren, Kaitlyn Randall (Cole), Brianna Grismore, Lacy Overton (Andy), Lanae Hyneman (Landon), Chelsea Erickson (David), Alex Sloan, and Ryan Garden (Brooke). He is also survived by great-grandson, Weston Randall.
Mike was a graduate of Bosse High School and Evansville College (University of Evansville) where he earned a degree in electrical engineering. He worked for Potter and Brumfield, later Siemens, and retired from Whirlpool.
Mike married Linda Davis in 1966, welcoming her daughter, Lisa, into his life. Together they later welcomed their son, Mike and Linda remained married until her passing in October, 1989.
In 1990, Mike married Janice Sloan, beginning a partnership that would define the next thirty-six years of his life. Together they shared a life filled with travel, laughter, treasured friendships, and countless adventures until Janice’s passing on June 5 of this year.
Mike and Janice loved to travel and rarely passed up an opportunity for a road trip. They spent the winter months at their “home away from home”, Las Olas Beach Club in Satellite Beach, Florida, where they built lasting friendships with people from across the county.
They also cherished time in the Smoky Mountains, exploring Colonial Williamsburg, visiting historic lighthouses, and discovering the places that brought history to life.
Besides traveling, Mike also enjoyed bowling, reading, crossword puzzles, Sudoku, and a lively game of Tri-Ominoes. He also had a pilot’s license. Mike was endlessly curious and happiest when learning something new, sharing a good book, or challenging family and friends to one more game.
Although Mike was a quiet man, his greatest legacy was the family he loved and supported. Family meant far more to Mike than biology. He loved the children who came into his life as his own, and those who knew him simply knew him as Dad or Grandpa.
The family would like to offer a heartfelt thank you to all the staff at Cypress Grove Rehabilitation Center in Newburgh, Indiana, for the gentle care provided to Mike over the last year. They also want to thank the staff of Heart-to-Heart Hospice who kept him comfortable during his final days. The family is also deeply grateful to the staff of Alexander Funeral Home- Newburgh Chapel, especially RJ and Mike for their kindness, compassion, and guidance during this difficult time.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, July 18, 2026 from 2:00pm-7:00pm at Alexander Funeral Home- Newburgh Chapel. No other services will be held locally.
