Phoebe A. Shrimpton

Born in Port Lavaca, Texas, to Stanley Sr. and Mildred Matson, Phoebe and her four siblings were raised on their parents' farm and ranch. It was there that she developed the work ethic, resilience, and love of the outdoors and nature that stayed with her throughout her life. When her children would complain about doing household chores she would remind them that they never had to pick cotton or move irrigation pipes in the middle of the night. She spent most of her life in Newburgh, Indiana, where she built a life she was proud of.

A standout athlete, Phoebe was a high-scoring basketball player at Calhoun High School in Port Lavaca (she once scored 40 points in a game, and she had the newspaper clipping to prove it), where she graduated in 1962. She went on to attend Victoria College and worked briefly as a secretary. On May 29, 1964 she married Philip Chrisco, with whom she raised four children. After raising her family, she was employed by Stein Mart in Evansville and The Edge fitness center in Newburgh, where she enjoyed visiting with members while working the front desk. On December 30, 2006, she married David Shrimpton, and the two made the most of their years together - traveling abroad and across the country in their RV, riding bikes, and rarely sitting still. Phoebe's competitive spirit never left her - it showed up in family activities like board games and long walks. She took pride in her home and the spaces around it, working tirelessly to create something beautiful wherever she lived - but filling her home with those she loved was her greatest satisfaction.

Phoebe is survived by her husband, David Shrimpton; her sister, Brenda Peterson (Lummie); her brother, Joseph Matson (Nora); her children, Paul Chrisco (Amy), Patrick Chrisco (Judy), Peter Chrisco (Jennifer), and Penny Jacobs (Jay); her stepsons, James Redo (Jill), Matthew Shrimpton (Meghan), and Andrew Shrimpton (Sophie); and her grandchildren, Katie Chrisco (Trey Embrey), Kevin Chrisco (Ally Melnik), Nick Chrisco (Miranda), Jacob Chrisco, Rea Johnson (Larry Jr.), Natalie Rude (Joshua), Ashley Jacobs, Kelsey Jacobs, Leslie Jacobs, Cole Chrisco, Birdie Shrimpton, Simon Shrimpton, Maisie Shrimpton, and Olivia Shrimpton; and great-granddaughter Delilah Johnson. She was preceded in death by her parents, Stanley Sr. and Mildred Matson, and her brothers, Stanley Matson Jr. and James Michael Matson.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. CDT on Saturday, August 15, 2026 at Alexander Newburgh Chapel, 5333 State Road 261, Newburgh, IN officiated by Pastor Mark Dicken. Friends and family may visit from 10:00 a.m. CDT until service time on Saturday at the funeral home. The service will be viewable via livestream starting at 12:45 p.m. CDT on Saturday at www.facebook.com/FuneralStreamUSA. Burial will be held at a later date at Greenlawn Gardens Cemetery in Port Lavaca, TX.
