Born in Guyton, GA, he was the son of Herman Sanders and Marie (Wolf) Sanders. He became an Iron Worker and worked many large projects in Florida, including construction of the “Tree of Life” in Disneyworld’s Animal Kingdom. Bill met his wife of 47 years, Lucinda “Cindy” Hedges while in Florida. They moved to Indiana and made a home closer to family. Bill worked for Industrial Contractors (ICI/Skanska) as both and iron worker and superintendent. He joined Alcoa’s Warrick Operations and held many positions including Construction Site Manager for the largest and most complex installations over the last 30 years. These projects helped kept the plant alive and profitable, having a tremendous impact on the community of Warrick County. Following his retirement, he returned to Alcoa to help lead the 2018 successful restart of the Warrick Smelter. Contractors, workers, owners, corporate compliance organizations, and engineers all respected and trusted Bill.
Bill loved the water and enjoyed many yearly trips to the Panama City area with his family. He also loved music, photography, and watching his boys, grandkids, family and friends enjoy his backyard oasis. Bill was a graduate of the Purdue Extension Master Gardener Program and you could tell this by a quick tour of his yard. He also had a love for Mopar and owned many muscle cars over the years.
Bill was an inspiration to all who lived or worked with him. He always had a positive, can-do attitude, no matter what the challenge. He would say with a grin “More Better”. Even when faced with his A.L.S diagnosis in May 2020, his complete purpose was how to prepare those he loved for his departure…a new way of life.
