Alvin A. Rogers was born on January 29, 1947 in Chicago, Illinois. He was the youngest child born to John Rogers and Gladys Jackson.
He grew up in Altgeld Gardens Housing Project on the South Side of Chicago. In that neighborhood, he attended George Washington Carver Area High School. Throughout the course of his academic career, he attended Olive Harvey/Southeast College (1965 - 1972), Harold Washington College (1973 - 1977), and Governors State University (1989 - 1990). As a student, he was dedicated to the study of criminal justice, sociology, and public policy: passionate interests that he pursued further in his career journey.
A true protector of people at heart, Alvin was enlisted in the U.S. Army from May 23rd, 1969 to May 24th, 1972. Following his honorable discharge from military service, he continued a career in public safety through the Chicago Police Department for 32 years. As a police officer, he conducted undercover and covert operations under the city’s Special Operations Group, combating gang crime and maintaining peace through the Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy (CAPS) Program. After his retirement from the police department, he then worked as a Sergeant of Aviation Police at O’ Hare International Airport and Midway International Airport for 17 years, protecting passengers in two of the busiest travel hubs in the United States from illicit activities.
Alvin participated in many wonderful hobbies including traveling, music, basketball, football, sports memorabilia collecting, and spending time with loved ones at home and on the road. His passions extended to him managing his own comic book store, spreading the joy of his hobbies with the community at large. He also enjoyed game nights with family, an avid fan of poker as well as dice and tile-based games. For these lively events, he’d supply fun prizes for the winners alongside warm smiles and abundant laughter.
Alvin transitioned to eternal life on April 19th, 2025.
While diligent in his career, family was the most important thing to Alvin. He was a loving husband to Zenobia, his wife of 33 years, and cherished his children Alvin Jr., Shawn, John, and Alexandria. In addition to his wife and children, fond memories of him will continue to live on in his grandchildren Shawn Jr., Noah, Julian, Mason, Daniel, and a host of family and friends.
A memorial visitation for Alvin will be held Monday, April 28, 2025 from 11:30am to 12:30pm. Followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 12:30pm located at Blake Lamb Funeral Home, 4727 W 103rd Street, Oak Lawn, IL, 60453.
