It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Cheri (Winiecki) Holmes a beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin, colleague, and friend who left this world far too soon, but whose light will continue to shine in the hearts of all she touched.
Cheri was the loving wife of David Holmes, her sweetheart of 27 years and husband of 17 years, and the proud mother of their two sons, Alex (13) and Leo (10). She was the cherished daughter of Elizabeth (James) Crotty and the late Ronald Winiecki, devoted twin sister to Theresa (Pamela Plotkin) Winiecki and dear aunt to Francesca, and sister to Nicholas (Norma) Winiecki. Cheri was the beloved daughter-in-law of George and Ellen Holmes, sister-in-law of Deanna (Allen) Holmes and Jennifer (David) Marek, and aunt to Matt and Ryan Marek. Cheri was also the stepsister to James (Cathy) Crotty and a dear cousin to many. She was a loyal friend to so many who were blessed by her warmth, humor, and compassion.
Cheri lived each day with strength, optimism, and grace. No matter what life placed before her, she faced it with courage, determination, and an open heart. Her presence could light up any room, and her laughter lifted even the heaviest of hearts. Cheri lived with purpose and integrity, forever inspiring those fortunate enough to know her.
A proud Lieutenant, Firefighter, and Paramedic with the Chicago Fire Department, Cheri dedicated over two decades, 22 years with the Chicago Fire Department and 27 years as a paramedic selflessly serving others with unwavering courage and dedication. She was deeply respected by her colleagues and admired by her community, a true role model to many and a shining example of what it means to live a life filled with purpose, integrity, and service.
Cheri’s love, light, and laughter will forever echo in the hearts of those she leaves behind. Her legacy endures in the countless lives she touched — through her service, her friendships, and her unwavering love for her family. Heaven has gained a beautiful angel, but Cheri will remain in our hearts forever.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2025, from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Blake-Lamb Funeral Home in Oak Lawn, Illinois, with a spiritual service beginning at 7:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to The Yard Foundation in Cheri’s memory to honor her generous spirit and support a cause that helped her during her journey.
“There are some who bring a light so great to the world that even after they have gone, the light remains.”
