A Life of Love, Strength, Faith, and Legacy
February 14, 1932 – October 14, 2026
“Well done, thou good and faithful servant.” — Matthew 25:21
On February 14, 1932, a beautiful life began with the birth of Mary Louise Tate, born to Nellie and Earl Trice. Later in life, she legally changed her name to Donnay Caroll, the name by which she would become lovingly known and remembered.
Her birthday held a special significance, as she was born on Valentine's Day—a day dedicated to celebrating love. How fitting for a woman whose remarkable life would leave such an unforgettable legacy of strength, creativity, wisdom, and love.
On October 14, 2026, at the blessed age of 94, Donnay completed her earthly journey and transitioned into eternal rest with the Lord.
Donnay was the youngest of three children. Her beloved siblings, Dorothy (Bill) and Eddie, preceded her in death.
From an early age, Donnay displayed a remarkable spirit of creativity, independence, determination, and strength. She was a woman who knew her worth, valued her independence, and took great pride in protecting both herself and the things she worked hard to obtain. She possessed a personality that was uniquely her own—a combination of wisdom, confidence, artistic expression, and unwavering conviction.
A gifted artist in every sense of the word, Donnay had an extraordinary ability to draw almost anything her imagination could envision. But her artistic talents did not stop there. She was also a talented bongo player who shared her musical gifts alongside many great artists. Performing under the unforgettable alias “Kitty Uzell,” she brought her own special rhythm and personality to the world of music and radio.
Her calling cards proudly carried the memorable slogan, “Have Bongos, Will Travel!” A phrase that perfectly captured her adventurous spirit, musical passion, and willingness to share her gifts wherever the rhythm of life would take her.
Beyond her many talents, Donnay's greatest legacy was her family. She was the proud mother of three children. Preceding her in death were her beloved sons, Arrow Brown Jr. and Kevin Lavail Brown, along with her daughter-in-law, Lorainne Brown.
She leaves to cherish her precious memory her only surviving daughter, Tridia Donnay Baker, and devoted son-in-law, Dennis Baker.
The relationship between Donnay and her daughter Tridia was truly special. Their bond extended far beyond that of mother and daughter; they were also best friends. Through life's joys, challenges, and unforgettable moments, they shared a connection rooted in love, trust, and companionship.
Donnay was also the cherished grandmother of four grandchildren: Erik Clinton Lamidi, Kevin Lavail Davis, Tabitha Stroud (Melvin), and Toika L. Davis (Feloney). Her legacy continues through a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and loved ones whose lives were touched by her presence.
As the beloved matriarch of the family, Donnay held a place of honor that could never be replaced. She was the one family members turned to when life demanded serious advice, honest answers, and the wisdom that only years of experience could provide. Her words carried meaning, her presence commanded respect, and her love left an everlasting mark.
Donnay's spiritual journey was an important part of her life. On April 17, 1992, she publicly professed her faith and was baptized at Third Baptist Church of Chicago, under the leadership of Reverend Elmer L. Fowler, Pastor. Her faith became a part of the legacy she would leave behind, reminding her family of the importance of trusting God through every season of life.
During the final chapter of her earthly journey, Donnay was surrounded by extraordinary love, compassion, and devotion. Beginning in January 2026, her granddaughter Toika L. Davis, Toika's husband Feloney, and their daughter Tridia worked tirelessly and diligently, alongside dedicated nurses, to provide Donnay with comfort, care, dignity, and peace in their home.
Their daily sacrifices, unwavering commitment, and loving presence were a beautiful expression of what family truly means. Through long days and challenging moments, they remained devoted to ensuring that their beloved Queen was cared for with the tenderness and respect she deserved until the Lord called her home.
Queen Caroll was more than a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, artist, and woman of faith. She was our foundation, our source of wisdom, our protector, and our family's treasured matriarch.
Although her earthly presence will be deeply missed, her spirit will forever remain woven into the lives of those she loved. Her creativity, strength, unforgettable personality, and the countless memories she created will continue to be celebrated for generations to come.
