Ernest “Ernie” Pentek Jr., 70, of Chicago, passed away unexpectedly on April 4th, 2025. A dedicated father, husband, and public servant, Ernie’s life was marked by compassion and unwavering commitment to his family.
Born on July 27th, 1954, in Chicago, Illinois, Ernie grew up with a strong sense of duty and heart for service. After graduating high school, he enlisted in the Marines Corp, serving years honorably. In 1980 Ernie joined the Chicago Fire Department, where he served proudly for 33 years. Ernie responded to thousands of calls, saving lives and mentoring countless young friends along the way. He was known for his quick wit and remaining calm under pressure in the toughest situations.
Outside the station, Ernie’s greatest pride and joy was his family and his faith. He and his beloved wife, Susan, were married for 47 years and raised 10 children together. His love for his children Ernest Pentek III, Christina (Dave) Riedel, Sean (Kaeley) Pentek, Zachary (Angela) Pentek, Nicholas (Amy) Pentek, Jeremiah (Deidre) Pentek, Rebecca (Daniel Finn) Pentek, Emily (Michael) Moore, Lucas (Ruby) Pentek and Samuel (Caitlin) Pentek knew no bounds. He supported each of them fiercely. He planned every holiday party, attended every major life event, even if it meant driving hours. Ernie’s values of hard work, honesty and kindness live on in them and in his 19 grandchildren who now carry his legacy forward. Ernie was a devoted Christian and member of Ashburn Baptist Church.
In retirement, Ernie found joy in simple pleasures, he never passed up a garage door job, loved visiting with the Piscateer’s club, making sausage with his kids and sharing stories over Hungarian Bacon Frys. Ernie is survived by his wife Sue, their 10 children, his 19 grandchildren, and his 3 dogs. He also leaves behind a grateful community and fire house family who will never forget his huge heart.
His flame burned bright and warm, though now at rest, the light he brought to others will never fade!
