

James Hellmann, 84, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2026. Born on February 3, 1942, James lived a life defined by service, devotion to his family, and an unforgettable personality that left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
James was the devoted husband of Carol (Burba) Hellmann. Together they built a loving family that remained the center of his life. He was a proud and loving father to Rick Hellmann and Dennis (Nicole) Hellmann, and a cherished grandfather to Ryan, Cassandra, and Rizen, who brought him tremendous joy. He was preceded in death by his parents, the late Joseph and late Rose Hellmann, and his brother, the late Joseph (Kate) Hellmann.
James proudly served his country in the Army National Guard before embarking on a distinguished 33-year career with the Chicago Police Department, where he protected his community with honor and integrity. During his law enforcement career, he worked as a Detective and Hostage Negotiator, earning the respect and admiration of both his colleagues and the countless people whose lives he touched.
Above all else, James was a family man. He loved gathering with family and friends, where he could share stories, make people laugh, and tell one of his many memorable jokes. A gifted storyteller with a quick wit, he had a remarkable ability to light up any room. As his family fondly says, "Everyone knew when he was in the room." His larger-than-life presence, sense of humor, and genuine love for those around him will be deeply missed but forever remembered.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at Blake-Lamb Funeral Home, 4727 W. 103rd Street, Oak Lawn, Illinois 60453. A chapel service will be held at the funeral home immediately following the visitation before proceeding to St. Casimir Catholic Cemetery, 4401 W. 111th Street, Chicago, Illinois 60655, for interment.
James's legacy lives on through his beloved family, the countless lives he touched through his years of service, and the memories of laughter, love, and stories that will be cherished for generations.
