John Louis

Dr. John Louis (Papou), 100 yrs, of Lake Forest, Illinois, passed away peacefully on May 2, 2025, in Scottsdale, Arizona. Born, June 21, 1924, in Chicago to Greek immigrant parents, John lived a century marked by compassion, dedication, and a boundless passion for helping others. A 1942 graduate of Morgan Park Military Academy, he proudly served in the United States Army, receiving an honorable discharge in 1945. He went on to earn his medical degree from the University of Illinois in 1950, embarking on a remarkable 50-year career as a Hematologist Oncologist in the Chicago area.

Dr. Louis was a pioneer in cancer chemotherapy research and the founder and head of the Midwest Cooperative Chemotherapy Group. His groundbreaking work helped shape the future of cancer treatment, and his commitment to healing touched tens of thousands of lives. At a time when the doctor-patient relationship was sacred, John often refused payment from patients who were unable to afford care. In return, he was gifted home-cooked meals, handmade tokens of appreciation, and the enduring love of a community he selflessly served.

He is survived by his beloved children, Priscilla Ferry and Demetrios Louis, and by his five cherished grandchildren: Demetrios, Aislin, Cady, Nico, and Gio.

John's joy came not only from his profession but from the simple pleasures of life—family dinners, deep conversations, and laughter that echoed through every gathering. He had a booming voice, a warm presence, and an insatiable curiosity about science and the world around him. He never met a stranger, only friends he hadn’t yet made.

Dr. John Louis will be remembered as a healer, a trailblazer, a devoted father and grandfather, and a man who gave freely from his heart. His legacy of generosity, wisdom, and love will live on in all those fortunate enough to have known him.
