HERBERT

Joseph Anthony Herbert, age 93, died peacefully on September 10, 2017. Joe was the founder and sole owner of Marquette Photo Supply. He was a continuous fixture in the Chicago Lawn community since November of 1944 until his death. Joe could always be found behind the counter of his store serving customers and making new lifelong friends. In his time he was appointed to the Commission for Health Planning and Resource Development by Mayor Richard J. Daley. He was also a Director of Southwest Bank, the President of the Chicago Lawn Chamber of Commerce and served as Chairman of the local YMCA board. Joe was very close to his church and had a particular bond with the Augustinian Order in the area. In his capacity as friend and photographer he traveled to Peru and photographed the Augustinian Mission there. Because of all his many contributions to the Augustinian Order he was made an Affiliate of the Midwest Augustinians. Joe is predeceased by his beloved parents, Elizabeth (Mausz) and Peter Herbert and brother Peter II. He is survived by his loving wife Barbara, nee Davis, as well as her children, Babette (David) Meiners and Owen Davis. He was the devoted brother-in-law of Marion (the late Peter II) Herbert-Fernandez, cherished uncle of Mary Ann (Jack) Scott, Peter III (Diane) Herbert and Carolyn (Kastytis) Ilginis. He leaves eleven great nephews and nieces and seventeen great-great nephews and nieces all of whom will greatly miss, but joyfully remember their “Uncle Joe”. Funeral Saturday, 10:15 a.m. at Blake-Lamb Funeral Home, 4727 West 103rd St., Oak Lawn to St. Rita of Cascia Shrine Chapel, 7740 So. Western Ave., Chicago. Mass 11:00 a.m. Interment: Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Visitation Friday 3:00 – 9:00 p.m. Info 708-636-1193 or www.blakelamboaklawn.com.

So sorry to find this out. Joe loved dogs. He didn't love seeing us as much as seeing our two Siberian Huskies. When we would say, "we'll come again and visit" he would always remind us to bring the dogs. And so, we always brought the dogs with. On one of our visits, I took pictures of Joe with the two dogs. And I gave him a frame with the two photos -- one photo of him with each dog. RIP my friend. You will be missed. Jody Levine, Michael Stern, Maya and Aspen

"Uncle Joe" as we called him, was a life long friend of my parents Paul and Ellen Lilek. As a kid, I remember going with my dad to the Photo Supply store to visit with Joe and play with his dog. As an adult, I came to respect his kindness and generosity. They just don't make 'em like Uncle Joe anymore!

Joe and I did business for many years. We had a lot of fun conversations over the phone and I loved his laugh. He was always up beat about our photo industry and loved what he was doing. I had the chance over the last couple of years of years to visit him at his store and he was more charming in person. The community and the industry will miss a good one.

My deepest sympathy to Barbara and family. I will keep Joe and all of you in my prayers. Barry Blane/Gary Camera Merrillville, Indiana
