Kathleen Marie Melvin (Thome), of Oak Lawn, Illinois, passed away suddenly on Friday, October 2nd, 2026. She was born on December 31st, 1962, and was the eldest of five children born to Bernard and Linda Thome. Kathy grew up in the small town of Hometown, Illinois, on the southwest side of Chicago.
Kathy will be remembered for her incredibly sweet, kind and caring personality, giving such a warm, gentle presence to everyone around her. She was complimented by many for her beauty and often described as the best dressed in the room.
Kathy leaves behind her beloved husband of 39 years, William, and her two children, Matthew and Kara. The center of Kathy’s world were her roles as a mother and grandmother. She took great pride in her children; surrounding them with so much love, unconditional support, and a sense of safety while giving them such a bright childhood. Above all, Kathy was a devoted and proud grandmother to her two-year-old granddaughter, Lena, who brought immense joy and happiness to her life. She cherished every moment with Lena and would do anything to make her happy. She always called her daughter, which now was stolen by her granddaughter, as her “girlfriend” or “girly-q.”
Professionally, Kathleen was known as an extremely hard worker who took immense pride in everything she built. She began her career as a respiratory therapist and continued her education while working full time and raising two small children, earning her bachelor's degree from Benedictine University. This kickstarted a long and successful career as a pharmaceutical representative, a profession she proudly dedicated herself to for the last 30 years. Her dedication to her career was a reflection of the determination and work ethic she brought to everything she did.
Kathy could always be found cheering on her legendary Chicago White Sox. She cherished attending concerts with her childhood best friends, had a sharp eye for shopping the latest fashion trends and home decorating, and prioritized staying active through exercising. Some of her most treasured moments were spent walking her granddaughter, Lena, to the park. Kathy also loved her quiet routines, which always included a warm cup of tea every morning or snuggling up with a blanket to watch "her show." Kathy was also a woman of strong faith and attended Sunday Mass every week with her mother, a special tradition the two of them shared.
Kathy will be immensely missed, forever loved, and never forgotten by everyone fortunate enough to know her. Her memory will live on forever.
Kathy is survived by her husband, William Melvin; her children, Matthew Melvin and Kara (Xavier) Melvin; her granddaughter, Lena Robles; her mother, Linda Thome; siblings, Carol (Patrick) Feldner, Daniel (Christina) Thome, Amy (Rodrigo) Bayon, and Debra Thome; her godchildren, Amy, Carly, Isabel, and Jack; along with many loving brothers- and sisters-in-law,
nieces, nephews, extended family members, and the many dear friends who held a sacred place in her heart and whose lives she touched.
She was preceded in death by her father, Bernard Thome, and her brother, James Thome, adding her beautiful presence to the angels above.
