Mahmoud A. Halloway

April 28, 1933 – May 24, 2024
Obituary of Mahmoud A. Halloway
IN THE CARE OF

Blake-Lamb Funeral Home

Dr. Mahmoud Halloway, of Chicago and formerly of Rotifunk, Sierra Leone, passed away on May 24, 2024, at age 91.

Dr. Halloway was born in Rotifunk, Sierra Leone on April 28, 1933, to Yeneba Fofanah and Abdul Hussein Halloway. He received his secondary school education at the Albert Academy in Freetown, Sierra Leone where he particularly excelled in Latin, Language Arts, and Literature. He then went on to study at Lincoln University, before receiving a Bachelor of Science at Ohio State University in 1959 and a Doctor of Medicine from the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany in 1965. He trained at the former Cook County Hospital and practiced Obstetrics and Gynecology at Roseland Community Hospital, Metro South Medical Center (formerly St. Francis Hospital), and Little Company of Mary Hospital; he served as department chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology in all three hospitals. Always the dedicated learner, he earned a Master’s in Public Health from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1985. He retired from medicine in 2020.

Dr. Halloway will be remembered as a beloved father and husband, an avid reader, and a great appreciator of music, nature, and bookstores. He was a devoted physician, dedicated to, what he called, “the art of medicine.” He was deeply committed to matters of social justice and was enormously proud to be a son of Africa and, especially, of Sierra Leone. He was preceded in death by several family members, including his ever-cherished mother and older brother, Rashid Halloway. He is survived by his wife, Samira Halloway, three children, Rashid Halloway, Salwa Halloway, and Abdel Halloway, and nephew Hillel Halloway.

A Visitation for Mahmoud will be held Thursday, June 6, 2024 from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Blake Lamb Funeral Home, 4727 W. 103rd Street in Oak Lawn, Illinois 60453. Family and friends will meet Friday, June 7, 2024 at Morgan Park Presbyterian Church, 2017 W. 110th Place in Chicago, Illinois 60643 at 10:00 am with a Service to follow at 10:30 am. Interment directly to follow at Beverly Cemetery, 12000 Kedzie Avenue in Blue Island, Illinois 60406.

A repast will be held at the Beverly Arts Center 2407 W 111th St, Chicago, IL 60655 following interment.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Dr. Halloway’s memory to ICAP at Columbia University (https://icap.givenow.columbia.edu/). All donations given to ICAP in honor or memory of Dr. Halloway will go to funding maternal health initiatives in his native Sierra Leone. Please be sure to specify under the donation amount that your gift is in honor or memory of him.
