Zia Maria, I always said See Ya Maria, for as long as I knew her. She acted tough, but really had a great sense of humor, and seemed to appreciate mine. One time she cooked me some stuffed peppers and potatoes, and when I said they were so much better than her sisters she yelled "don't say that!". Over the years we continued to joke back and forth, and became good friends, I never tried to get away from visiting her when her favorite niece wanted to see her, and always greeted her the same whether we were arriving, or leaving, never without a hug and a kiss on the cheek. 

This is a very sad time for her family, but 96 years is a darn good run, and she will be missed by everyone. So, sadly, for the last time,

I always considered Maria as the 
Queen Bee of the family, to me she seemed to always lead by example by being both really strong in every way, and really sweet in every way. From when I was young until now, and whether it would be at parties/visiting at her house, or at any of our family gatherings, she always had a nice big smile on her face when she would see and talk to me, and whenever we talked she was always happy, and I love when she laughed! And then at their house back in the day the parties in their basement were always fun and good eating, and of course the Highlight of the party would be when Tony would bust out the ol’ bagpipes and play some cool tunes, it was always good times with them!! 
I am going to miss you Maria! I love you!




I am Jim Hilger, Sylvia’s husband, and brother-in-law to Beris Kaleb, Lucy’s husband.  Both Beris and I felt great love for Maria.  What stood out the most for us was Maria’s strength and perseverance.  How she struggled to keep her family together by working a full time job, and then coming home very exhausted to tend to her household duties, which included  cooking great meals, planning family get-togethers, washing and ironing clothes, sewing outfits for her daughters, among other things.  She was a  real dynamo.   She never  stopped working, and whenever Tony, her husband, needed help, she was always at his side.  I don’t know how she did it all, but she did.  And now she was called for more greater things—to work in the house of the Lord …how exciting!

My mom was a very special person.  Not only was she talented and had many skills and interests, such as cooking, sewing and gardening, but she also was a very caring person.  She loved her nieces and nephews as if they were her own.  She especially was very close to my little sister, Lucy, who suffered from emotional imbalance.  She was very fond of her two grandchildren, Julie, who had tragically passed from a young age, and Tony who has taken care of her so lovingly in her old age.  Lastly, she was a very prayerful person, reciting a list of special intentions before bedtime of all those relatives and friends who had gone before her.  Now I’m certain she continues to say prayers for us as she looks down on all of us from a much higher place.  I will always remember you,  and will love you forever.  Your daughter, Silvana 

My sweet Zia Maria, I have so many, many wonderful memories of you.  One of my favorite memories was going to family parties at your house, in your basement.  You and Zio Tony had the best parties!  Those are some of my sweetest childhood memories! It was always fun to visit and I absolutely loved sleeping over when I was a kid.  When I stayed over, you would feed me until I couldn’t eat any more. That’s one of the ways that you showed love and I REALLY felt loved.  
Mia Cara Zia, I love you so much!  I’m going to miss you and I’m going to miss our phone calls!!
 Often, when I called, at the end of our conversation you would say, “Say hello to your husband Rocco.  I send him 100 kisses!” 😊
