Milton Lee Davenport, born on December 10, 1943, in Chicago, Illinois was the third child from the marriage of Euwart and Mary Rose (Llorens) Davenport. Milton was a devoted son, brother, husband, father, uncle, Godfather, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was baptized into the Roman Catholic Faith, attending Saint Martin Elementary School, Tilden Technical High School, and Wilson Junior College.
Milton married Lydia (nee Smith) at Saint Martin, he was a beloved husband of 56 years. Together they hosted gatherings for family and friends. As a loving Dad to Paul and David Davenport there were family skating parties, hunting trips, and a supportive parent celebrating their accomplishments. Milton was a cherished grandfather to Melanie, Amanda, Donovan, Xavier and Kaylee and great grandfather to Kyia and Naomi.
Milton served in the United States Air Force, a Mail Carrier for the United States Post Office, a Sales Representative at American Foods, Painter at Providence Hospital, and a Salesperson at Lincoln Cemetery, while owning his painting and decorating business. It has been said, “…Those Davenport Brothers could really paint and hang wallpaper.”
In 1977, Milton joined the Chicago Fire Department and ascended through the ranks from a Fire Fighter, Engineer, Lieutenant, and Captain of Engine 120 before retiring in 2004.
Beaming with Davenport Pride, picnics, skating parties, and family celebrations, Milton was a dear brother to Julius (Eileen) Davenport, Albert Davenport, Ricardo Davenport, Susie (Horace) Smith, and Theresa (Herman) Brewer and the late Joseph Davenport and the late Mary Rose (Arthur) Bell. He was proud of his Louisiana Roots as he would be willing to share large pots of gumbo with a good roux.
Milton and Lydia are lifelong friends of David and Paulette Russell. Milton and friends John Stancil, Greg Lewis, and James Gray (Slow Drag), and Chuck James named themselves the “Booze Brothers.” There was always room for one more at Ruby’s Jewel Box.
As a loving uncle and father, Milton was a lot of fun, as the tickle master, he successfully procured the sold-out Michael Jackson Victory concert tickets at Comiskey Park, and always brought laughter. While sick, family members lost a son unexpectedly, his walking was slow and labored but Milton insisted on visiting the grieving parents to offer condolences. Family, friends, and fellow firefighters will confirm this compassionate spirit was Milton.
