

Richard Thomas Yates, Sr., age 78, passed away on May 8, 2025. Born on August 21, 1946, in Chicago, Illinois, and longtime resident of Orland Park, IL Richard lived a life marked by curiosity, dedication, and a deep love for his family.
A pioneer in the world of technology, Richard worked in the field of Information Technology during a time when computers were just beginning to shape the modern world. With remarkable intelligence and determination, he taught himself multiple computer languages an impressive feat that reflected both his passion and ingenuity. He often referred to himself proudly as “one of the first computer geeks,” a title he wore with humor and pride.
Beyond His professional accomplishments, Richard was known for his one-of-a-kind personality. He had a unique sense of humor and an uncanny ability to tell a story for any occasion. Whether gathered around the dinner table or chatting with friends and family, he could always be counted on to share a tale that would entertain and enlighten.
Richard's commitment to others extended far beyond his career. He served as Scoutmaster for Pack 372 as well as a camp director for Camp Betz. He guided young scouts with patience and enthusiasm and was truly passionate about his work with the scouts.
Family was at the heart of everything Richard did. He is survived by his beloved wife Mary; his son Richie; daughter-in-law Jamie; and grandson Charley. He also leaves behind his brothers Jim (Lynn), David (Connie), and Don (Sean). Dear brother in-law to Bill (Roula) Boorazanes, Patti (Rick) Charles, and Pam Yates. He was also a beloved Uncle to many nieces and nephews. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents Thomas and Florence; sister Dora; and brothers Frank, Tom (Shirley), and Bob (Beverly).
Richard’s legacy lives on through the stories he told, the lives he touched, and the love he gave so freely. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him. A Visitation will be held on Wednesday May 14, 2025, from 04:00 PM to 08:00 PM at Blake-Lamb Funeral Home at 4727 West 103rd Street Oak Lawn, IL 60453.
