He was born on August 24, 1943, in Chicago, Illinois, to Clarence and Gertrude Schickel. Bob grew up on Carpenter Street in Chicago’s Southside and is known to family and friends as Bob, Dad, or Grandpa. He lived a life built on hard work, storytelling, and good food. Bob worked as a crane operator in the rail yard, a job that reflected his strength and steady nature. He also served his community as a volunteer firefighter with the North Palos Fire Department and briefly served in the National Guard before being medically discharged.
Bob found happiness in the everyday parts of life. He took pride in having the greenest yard on the block, building radio-controlled airplanes, and spending many hours flying those planes. He enjoyed watching the Chicago White Sox, spending winters in Florida, and telling stories that often grew a little larger with each retold version. His deep voice carried through any room and was instantly recognized by anyone who knew him.
In earlier years, he enjoyed fishing for smelt on the lake and building model trains. He always held on to his boyhood fascination with airplanes and jets and could often be found sitting outside with binoculars, watching them pass overhead. His sense of wonder stayed with him throughout life.
He and his wife of 43 years, Donna (Erickson), made their home in Oak Lawn, where they hosted family gatherings filled with food, laughter, and conversation. Together, they never missed a birthday and always remembered each family milestone.
Bob was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Donna; his children, Robert (Tine Stage), Scot, Richard (Toni), Tom (Karmi), and Sean; his stepchildren, Deanna Ivkovic (Rob James) and Andy Ivkovic (Wendy); and his brothers, Ron and John. He was the proud grandfather of Kirsten, Mackenzie, Derek, Rileigh, Madison, Sydni, Evan, Olivia, Kaden, Ethan, Maximus, and Hans; his great-grandson Oliver; and he deeply cared for his many nieces and nephews.
Bob will be remembered for his humor, his booming voice, and the love he shared for his family. His stories and laughter will live on in the memories of all who knew him.
A gathering for a memorial will take place on Saturday December 6th, from 12pm - 4pm at Fox’s Pizza & Pub, 9240 South Cicero.
