Nothing made the characteristic Kooistra tough shell in Sam melt, except for Dianne. That's when you could see into his heart.

I was one of Sam's many friends from his Chicago Masters Team. I started swimming Chicago Masters in 1985 - Sam was the first on the team to reach out and make me feel welcome.

Over the years we had many meals together - mostly Friday morning breakfast after a workout - I would sit and listen to Sam tell story after story about his brilliant life and all of his experiences.

When I think of Sam I think of a man of uncompromising principle, character and integrity. If you were lucky enough to be his friend he was devoted and loyal.

Over the last several years - unable to swim anymore - I missed him and now that he has passed I feel a terrible sense of loss because he was my friend.
