Scott was the beloved husband of Maureen McGrail for 43 years. They were high school sweethearts, and their love and partnership where the foundation of a life built around family.
He was a devoted father to daughter, Carri McGrail (Wally Roche) and son Daniel (Megan) McGrail, and a proud grandfather to Angela and Daniel Jr.
Scott is also survived by his mother, Darla McGrail Walsh, brothers Kevin (Nancy) McGrail, Brian (Sue) McGrail, and Keith (Gayle) McGrail; his sister-in-law, Bernadette Pheifer, brother-in-law, Brian (Christina) Pheifer; and many loving nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and a large extended family. He was proceeded in death by his father, Frank “Bud” McGrail.
Scott was born on July 7, 1962 in Evergreen Park Illinois at Little Company of Mary Hospital. While working full-time, he studied to become a CPA and earned a Bachelor of Art and Business from Lewis University. He began his career of service as a volunteer firefighter for the city of Hometown, Illinois. He soon made firefighting his full-time career with the Oak Lawn Fire Department, while continuing to work in accounting for Advocate. Scott retired from the Oak Lawn Fire Department in 2017 after 20 years of dedicated service, having risen to the rank of Lieutenant. He served many years as president of the OLFD pension board and was a dedicated member of the OLFD club. He recently retired from Advocate this past April after 39+ years with the organization.
More than anything, Scott was all about family and creating memories together, even if it was simply sitting around the backyard fire pit making s’mores with his grandchildren. He loved the holidays, with Christmas being his favorite. He cherished road trips and camping, exploring new places with the people he loved, and was an avid collector of planes, trains, automobiles, and motorcycles. He brought the same curiosity and enthusiasm to his hobbies that he brought to everything else in life.
Scott will be remembered for his dedication to service-both to his community as a firefighter and to his family above all else-and for the countless memories, he worked so hard to create.
Visitation for Scott will be held at Blake-Lamb Funeral Home, 4727 West 103rd Street, Oak Lawn, IL 60453, on Sunday, August 9, 2026 from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm. A Prayer Service will take place at the Funeral Home on Monday August 10, 2026, from 9:15 am to 9:30 am, followed by a Funeral Service at St. Gerald Catholic Church, 9310 S. 55th Court, Oak Lawn, IL 60453, at 10:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial donations be made in Scott's memory to the American Red Cross, Toys4Tots, or the Salvation Army.
