With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Bryce Edward Jones at the age of 78. He left us too soon, but we find comfort that he was doing what he loved -- hiking the trails at Buena Vista Park. He was the beloved husband and soulmate of Sheryl O’Hara-Jones, with whom he shared a unique bond and devoted partnership for 42 years, built on “being each other’s best friend”.
A man of immense character and a "servant’s heart," Bryce’s life was defined by his dedication to his country, his professional excellence, his volunteer work within the Vista and North San Diego County communities, and his generous spirit.
Born in Spokane, Washington to Harry Jones and Marjorie Bloom, Bryce earned a BA in Business from the University of Washington and later an MBA in Accounting from National University.
Bryce served as a Lieutenant in the US Navy as a Communications Officer. He was stationed in Londonderry, Northern Ireland and served aboard the USS Ft. Fisher and USS Columbus.
A respected CPA, Bryce held leadership roles including Controller at Lenders Corporation and Treasurer at the Corky McMillin Companies. He later founded San Diego Small Biz Assist offering Part-time controller and business consulting services for small businesses in San Diego's North County that need to focus on cash management.
The ultimate volunteer, Bryce was generous with his talents and time donating his financial and business knowledge to local non-profit organizations: Vista Chamber of Commerce Treasurer, Boys & Girls Club of Vista finance committee, and North San Diego County Genealogical Society Treasurer. He also supported Camp Pendleton’s Military Outreach Ministry providing food to young service member families, and served on the golf committee of Wounded Warrior Homes.
Bryce had diverse interests. He enjoyed playing golf (carrying his clubs), hiking, attending Carlsbad TGIF concerts and Moonlight stage productions, solving puzzles and practicing his trombone decades after high school. An avid genealogist, he took great pride in tracing his lineage to two Mayflower pilgrims and becoming a member of The Pilgrim John Howland Society.
Bryce was one of a kind. His legacy of humor, quiet generosity, friendship and community service will be long remembered by all who knew him. His spirit lives on in the people he met.
The family is grateful to the nurses and doctors at Tri-City Medical Center for the care and compassion they showed Bryce during his final days.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a memorial donation in Bryce’s memory to the Moonlight Amphitheatre (Vista) https://www.moonlightstage.com/our-foundation/donate
Bryce leaves behind his loving wife Sheryl O’Hara-Jones, sister Meredith “Molly” Hilby, brother-in-law Gary O’Hara, sister-in-law Jan O’Hara, and dear nieces and nephew. As a veteran Bryce will receive an Honor service and be interred at Miramar National Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held at a future date at Shadowridge Golf Club.
