Our beloved mother, Celia Cobian, passed away in Vista, CA on July 27, 2026. Born in Tenango, Mexico, on November 14, 1935, she was 90 years of age at her passing. After growing up in nearby Tonaya and marrying Liborio Cobian in 1953, the couple emigrated legally with their two sons to San Diego’s North County in 1959 with support from sponsors Jack and Gertrude Merget. After serving as caretakers of the Leo Carrillo Ranch in Carlsbad, the couple eventually purchased a home in Vista where they raised their eight children and gained American citizenship. While there, Celia worked nearly 30 years at her local Catholic church in beginning multiple programs for Spanish-speaking families. Celia will be remembered as a devoted mother, a faithful wife, and a steadfast friend, cherished by her close-knit community. In particular, she will always be remembered for hosting large family gatherings to celebrate family members and the holidays, often preparing large quantities of homemade pozole or tamales. She is mother to eight children (Walter, Miguel, Irma, Daniel (deceased), Alicia, Edith, Gabriel, and Cynthia) with seventeen grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren.
The family wishes to thank Comfort & Peace Hospice and San Diego PACE for their tender support of Celia and family members over the past several weeks.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate her life at a Rosary & Viewing, set for Monday, August 10, 4:00 to 8:00 PM at Eternal Hills Mortuary in Oceanside. A Funeral Mass will be on Tuesday, August 11 at 11:00 AM at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Vista, with burial to follow at Eternal Hills.
