Crystal Hillary Langford

Some lives are remarkable not because they seek attention, but because they are lived with courage, resilience, and love. Such was the life of Crystal Hillary Langford, our beloved Mama.

Crystal passed away peacefully on August 4, 2026, at Carlsbad Senior Living in Carlsbad, California, at the age of 91.

Born on March 8, 1935, in Patna, Bihar, India, to Frederick Stafford DeMorais and Constance Darling (Wilkinson) DeMorais, Crystal had a childhood shaped by extraordinary events. As a young girl, she and her family survived the Partition of India, an experience that helped shape the resilient woman her family came to know and love.

Crystal graduated with honors from both Karachi Grammar School and La Martiniere Girls' High School in Lucknow, India. Education always held a special place in her heart. She admired those who pursued it and was an avid reader, especially of memoirs and other nonfiction. Even in her later years, she delighted in winning spelling bees at her assisted living community.

After graduation, Crystal worked at the Bank of China before accepting a position with the American Embassy in Karachi, where she met United States Marine James Lawrence Langford. They married and began a life together that eventually brought Crystal to the United States. She made the journey alone, leaving behind her parents, siblings, and the only home she had ever known until Jim completed his military tour. She proudly became an American citizen. Like many military spouses of her generation, Crystal often found herself managing a home and raising four children while Jim served overseas, including during the Vietnam War. Together, she and Jim built a life rooted in their Catholic faith and devotion to their family.

While raising her four children, Crystal balanced the responsibilities of motherhood with a career she was deeply proud of. She also pursued her love of acting through community theater, where she played the leading role of Sunla in the La Christiania Pageant in San Clemente. Following her performance, she was approached about pursuing acting professionally. Though honored by the opportunity, she chose to remain focused on her family.

Crystal worked for Westinghouse, Pepsi-Cola, C&H Sugar, and Sears Roebuck before finding her professional home at MiraCosta College. As Administrative Assistant for the Math & Science, Foreign Language, Astronomy, and Vocational Departments, she faithfully served students, faculty, and staff for 35 years. She took immense pride in contributing to her family's financial security and often said that working at MiraCosta was one of the greatest joys of her life. She retired only to care for her beloved husband during his illness.

To those who knew her best, Crystal was simply "Mama." She greeted nearly everyone with a warm "Darling," a term of endearment that became one of her signatures, and often left people with the blessing, "God bless you, and may angels and archangels watch over you." She took great pride in always looking her best. Whether she was going to work, church, or a family gathering, she was impeccably dressed, never missed her weekly hair appointment, and carried herself with quiet elegance. Though often complimented on her striking beauty, she accepted those compliments with humility.

Crystal also expressed her love through generosity. Family visits often ended the same way: with Mama quietly slipping money or a Starbucks gift card into your hand as you hugged her goodbye. Whether it was a small gesture or helping a family member through an important milestone, she wanted her children and grandchildren to have opportunities and comforts she could provide. Giving was one of the ways she expressed her love.

Crystal was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James Lawrence Langford, and her son, Howell Craig Langford.

She is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Karen Michelle Zornes; her sons, Forrest Tyler Langford and his wife, Nancy, and Brick Dejean Langford and his wife, Rebecca; her grandchildren, Paige Maloney; Lauren Grantham and her husband, Blake; Kerry Krajewski and her husband, Shawn; Erin Ernst and her husband, Dustin; Caitlin Casey and her husband, Sean; Sean Langford; Shani (Ari) Langford; Harrison Langford; Tyler Langford and his wife, Kasey; and Kyle Langford; her great-grandchildren, Addison James Casey and Caleb Lawrence Ernst; and many extended family members and dear friends.

Crystal's life carried her from India to America through extraordinary times. She lived a life marked by faith, hard work, generosity, and an enduring love for her family. She will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever our “Mama”.

In lieu of flowers, the family invites those who wish to honor Crystal's memory to make donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
