Dr. Daniel James Burch, beloved husband, father, grandfather, educator, and friend, passed away peacefully at home on August 11, 2025, at the age of 73. Born on September 1, 1951, in Bethesda, Maryland, Dan lived a life full of purpose, generosity, humor, and unwavering dedication to others.
To know Dan was to love him. A brilliant storyteller with a quick wit and an even quicker smile, he brought warmth and wisdom to every conversation. He was smart, kind, creative, a tireless worker, and the kind of person who made others feel heard and seen. He was a man of great depth—thoughtful, considerate, and always ready to lend a hand. Whether guiding students or building furniture in his woodshop, Dan poured his heart into everything he did.
Dan’s greatest joy in life was his family. He was a devoted husband to Sally for 23 years, and together they built a life filled with laughter, love, adventure, and shared passions. He was a loving and steadfast father to his daughters, Jessica and Cammie Burch (Seb), and a proud stepfather to Tiffany Villard (Kevin) and Katie L’Heureux (Justin). His family extended through strong bonds with his brother Ron Burch (Arlene), sister Debbie Burch, nephew Travis Burch, and a growing legacy of grandchildren: Reagan, Wells, Rory, Wyatt, Ivy, Laia, Colby, Blake, and Gwyn. His parents, Dot and Joe Burch of Oceanside, preceded him in death, but their values and love continued to live on in Dan.
Affectionately known as "Pop," Dan was the kind of grandfather who showed up—every game, recital, and school event. He celebrated every milestone with his grandchildren, cheered loudest from the sidelines, and offered encouragement, advice, and unwavering love. His daughters and stepdaughters adored him—not only as their father but as their confidant, mentor, and best friend. He was always the one they turned to, and he was always there.
Dan's passion for education defined much of his life. A proud graduate of UCLA with a degree in mathematics, he later earned his Doctorate in Education from Pepperdine University. He began his career teaching math and coaching high school soccer, later serving as an activities director. His path in leadership began at Dana Hills and San Clemente High Schools before he took on his first role as principal at Capistrano Valley High School.
He went on to open Murrieta Valley High School and later led Villa Park High School. His most beloved role was at Tesoro High School, where he served as principal for 13 years, deeply impacting the school community with his compassionate leadership. After “retiring,” Dan moved to San Diego with Sally—though retirement didn’t last long. He quickly became a fixture in the Oceanside, San Marcos, and Carlsbad school districts, taking on interim roles that fulfilled him deeply. In fact, he had hoped to accept another assignment just weeks before his passing.
Dan also served as an instructor in the master’s program at Concordia Lutheran University, teaching Sports Methods with enthusiasm and heart until just a week before his passing. He proudly served with the Mission Viejo Kiwanis Club for over 10 years and was instrumental in the accreditation of schools across the western U.S. through his work with WASC. In every role he took on—from the classroom to the principal’s office—Dan changed lives. He believed in second chances, saw potential in every student, and left an imprint that can still be felt in the hearts of countless families.
Outside of work, Dan found peace and joy in his passions. He was a master woodworker, a devoted reader and book collector, and an avid golfer. He loved the San Diego Padres, traveling, had a history of water skiing and snow skiing, and once had a cyclist’s heart and stamina. But even these hobbies took a back seat to time with his family.
Dan's legacy is one of kindness, mentorship, love, and impact. He believed in showing up, in doing the right thing, and in giving his best to everything he touched. His presence was strong, his heart was full, and his love was unconditional.
