David Wellington Johnson Jr.

David was born December 17, 1931, in Fayetteville, North Carolina to David and Annie Loraine Johnson. He graduated from Hendersonville High School in 1950 and received his BA from Furman University in 1954. David spent time serving as an officer in the United States Navy on the USS Pickaway and in 1957 married Rebecca Jane Montgomery in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

In addition to his naval service, David was employed by the Hendersonville Tribune, worked in public relations for Wachovia Bank, taught school in South Carolina, North Carolina and finally in San Diego. He went on to work in the administration of elementary, junior and senior high levels with San Diego City Schools until his retirement in 1989. Due to his love of travel, David joined the staff at the Adventures In Travel agency as an outside sales agent and enjoyed traveling the world with his family.

David was a member of Clairemont Emmanuel Baptist Church and served there as the missions coordinator for many years. Related to his service with and to the many missionaries the church sent out around the world, David made many trips to encourage and support them, including 19 trips to Papua New Guinea. He is known to many missionaries and their children, fondly, as “Uncle Dave”.

David is survived by his wife, Becky, his son and his wife, Rick and Eunice; his daughter and her husband, Sherry and Steve Hougard; three grandchildren, Madison, Nate and Shayne Hougard; his sister Joyce Youngblood of Hendersonville, NC and his niece Kaye Youngblood.

David was the kindest and gentlest man. His selfless service and leadership has impacted the lives of countless individuals.

Graveside service will be held at 2:30 pm, Thursday, August 1, 2013 at Eternal Hills Mortuary, 1999 El Camino Real, Oceanside, CA 92054

Memorial Service will be September 7, 2013 at Clairemont Emmanuel Baptist Church,2610 Galveston Street, San Diego, CA 92117
