Dennis L. Derieg

Dennis L. Derieg, of Oceanside and Fort Bragg, California, passed away peacefully on September 8, 2026, at the age of 86. Born on August 31, 1940, in Denver Colorado, to Vince and Vivian Derieg. Dennis grew up in Denver, spending his summers on the family farm in Nebraska. After excelling in high school sports, including cross country and becoming the city high school wrestling champion, he attended Colorado State University and entered the College of Veterinary Medicine. He served in the US Air Force, where he worked as a Veterinarian in Michigan. Following his service, he earned his Masters of Medical Science at Tulane University.

Dennis was an accomplished veterinarian who had a tremendous work ethic. He owned and worked at several clinics around Oceanside, Carlsbad, and Vista over his 50+ year career. Throughout his career, he was a great mentor and friend to many local veterinarians and focused his later years on providing support and performing intricate surgeries. Dennis was the neighborhood vet, regularly doing pet care at friends’ homes or his own. He even stitched up a few of his human patients along the way. His passion for knowledge and his love of medicine kept him active and informed late into his life.

Dennis was everyone’s friend. And if you didn’t know him, you were just a friend he hadn’t met yet. His quick wit, kind heart, and genuine interest in others brought laughter and warmth wherever he went. And he went everywhere! He was regularly spotted around town listening to music, at beach, grabbing a beer, or out to dinner. He’d even pop into friends’ homes if he saw a familiar car out front! He loved to ride his bike around Fire Mountain. He was an athlete through and through. He swam, golfed, skied, bowled, fished, played tennis and racquetball. He regularly swam in the ocean, and he loved to sit at the beach in the late afternoons. Later in life you would find him sitting in his yard, surrounded by lush trees, usually reading, listening to the sounds of nature around him.

Dennis is preceded in death by both of his parents, his sister Sherry, and his brother Charles. He is survived by so many who loved him dearly, including his beloved wife of 26 years, Dominique, his children Devon, Dan and Drew; his grandchildren Nathan, Natalie and Taylor; and his beautifully extended family including Michael, Geoff, Vanessa, Alexandra, Katie, Tucker, Denise, Doug, Agi, Marcus and Wanda.

For so long, he was the center of our family universe. His home was the gathering spot for countless moments and memories and a comforting place that we could all return. He raised his family in Oceanside, and those who knew Dennis will remember the deep love he had for his family and the immense joy he found in being a Dad and “Papa,” his proudly held title around town. His devotion was evident not in words alone, but in the way he showed up. Whether it was a golf tournament, baseball game, football game, soccer match, musical, showcase, ceremony, carnival, birthday, or holiday celebration, Dennis was there. Some of our happiest times together were spent gathered around the table for family dinners.

His legacy will live on through the family, friends, and loved ones he cherished so deeply, who will carry his memory forward with love, gratitude, and affection.

Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Thursday, September 24th at Eternal Hills Memorial Park at 1:00 PM. A reception will follow at Devon and Geoff’s home.
