Doug was born August 17th, 1943 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada to Gordon & Thelma Grills. Doug is survived by his wife, Carla Grills of Escondido, CA; son Matthew Grills of Escondido, CA; son, Chad and daughter-in-law Anna Grills of Kailua, HI and two grandsons, Emmett and Gavin also of Kailua, HI.
He was the second child of six. Doug’s siblings are Beverley Johnson of Irvine, CA., Patricia Martinez of Yelm, Wa, David Grills and Gary Grills of Harrison, AR. Doug was predeceased by his youngest sister Karen Spencer, of Harrison, AR.
Doug’s family immigrated in 1951 to the US where Doug grew up in Garden Grove, California. He graduated from Rancho Alamitos High School. He was saved and baptized at Huntington Beach First Christian Church which changed the direction of his life. He graduated from Pacific Christian College, Long Beach, CA(now Hope University, Fullerton, CA) in 1967. His BS degree was in Ministry.
While in college, Doug met and married Carla Adams of Anaheim, CA. in 1965. They were in pastoral ministry in Twin Falls, Idaho; Needles, CA; Culver City, CA; Quartz Hill, CA and Cottage Grove, Oregon. Doug had been trained in insurance with New York Life while in Lancaster, CA. After planting a church for Foursquare Churches in Oregon, Doug returned to California to pursue business in the Life Insurance field.
In 1981 the family settled in Escondido, CA and have remained there 40 years to the present.
While earning his living through the Insurance and Investment industry, Doug continued to serve God. Doug considered his business a ministry to widows and orphans-a Deacon’s ministry. He was an Elder for many years at Cathedral of the Valley in Escondido, then hosted a House Church for 8 ½ years before joining Glory Mountain and finally The Father’s House of San Marcos.
Doug ministered with the Healing Rooms International for ten years and served with other house church members feeding the homeless for 4 ½ years in Escondido. Doug was always reaching out to people in need. He loved to pray for others. One of Doug’s favorite sayings (and he had many) was: It is the duty of every believer to get radically loved by God! He knew his heavenly Father loved him beyond all others. We have no doubt that Doug abides in the presence and peace of Father God.
