Born in Montreal, Canada, on June 27, 1933, Ed was seven years older than his beloved brother, Bruce. Their parents, Edward Keller of Meiringen, Switzerland, and Maria Jarvi, of Kauhava, Finland, were recent immigrants.
Ed worked from a young age. In High School, he played Water polo and excelled as a Runner. As a Boy Scout, he achieved the rank of Queen's Scout.
Ed attended McGill University while concurrently completing his military service as a Flight Cadet in the Royal Canadian Air Force Reserve. It was at this time that he was introduced to the game of Duplicate Bridge and it became a life-long passion.
After receiving his B.S. in Engineering, in 1959, Ed accepted employment in the burgeoning Aerospace industry in Los Angeles, California, and went on to design the battery pack used on one of the Apollo Space missions.
In 1960, he married Audrey Lower of Quebec City, Canada. Together they made their home in the San Fernando Valley and started a family, welcoming Barb, Dianne, Julie and Ted.
Ed accomplished much in his ninety years and willingly helped so many.
A lover of the outdoors, Ed enjoyed backpacking, rock climbing, and skiing with a core group of dear friends and all their children. A lifelong runner, he was a member of the South Bay Distance Runners and was in charge of setting up the annual Sand and Strand distance run in Hermosa Beach, California. In 1972 he ran in the Boston Marathon.
It was around this time that Valerie Lake and her son, Sean, entered his life and theirs became a lifelong bond.
Ed traveled in Europe and joined a group heading to base camp at Mt. Everest, Nepal. In 1978, he completed his MBA at Pepperdine University.
Upon his re-marriage to Darlene Bordeaux in 1986, his family (and heart) grew even larger, to embrace children Bill, Michelle, Bobby and Lisa.
In 2002, Ed and Darlene served a Mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in South Africa-- the highlight of their life together.
Ed is survived by his former spouse and lifelong friend, Audrey, all of his children, his many beloved grandchildren, his nieces and nephews in Canada, and a wide circle of dear friends.
Services, to be officiated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, will be held at Eternal Hills Memorial Park, in Oceanside, California.
Ed was passionate about spending time in nature, and during his life gave generously to the Sierra Club. If you are moved to give a gift, please consider making a donation to the Sierra Club.
