Frederick John Matthews Jr. of Oceanside, Ca, known to most as Fred, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, September 15, 2026 at the age of 60, after a very long and difficult battle with head and neck cancer.
He was born and raised in Oceanside, where he lived most of his life.
Growing up in South Oceanside, he was a Boy Scout who proudly achieved Eagle Scout status at quite a young age.
A 1984 graduate of Oceanside High School, he recently attended his 40th-year class reunion. "ONCE A PIRATE, ALWAYS A PIRATE
As an adult, Fred started his own landscaping business where he was able to do the outdoor work that he loved, helping his clients for almost 30 years.
He took great pride in his work, had a wonderful attention to detail and had a true gift in his ability to make each property as beautiful as it could be. He treated each client's property as if it were his own. Thank you for allowing him to do so. He loved being outdoors as much as he could, enjoying all that nature had to offer. Hiking when he was younger, including 2 climbs to Mt Whitney. One as a teen in scouts and the other as an adult with one of his children, who was also in scouts. Several short day trips for pleasure later in life, simply because "he could". Including taking me on a weekend hike to San Jacinto. The scenery was magnificent. He especially enjoyed going on motorcycle rides and just taking it all in on the open road.
He is survived by his wife of 13 years, Sylvia Matthews; his father, Fred (Carol) Matthews Sr.; children: Kelsie (Michael) Rodriguez, Andrew Matthews, Andres (Kaylie) Fernandez, Alejandra Fernandez and Madelyn McCauley; grandchildren: Ryan, Valentina, and Amara, who were the light of his life.
2 sisters- Patricia (Glen) Brier and Dorothy Matthews, and several nephews, nieces, and cousins whom he loved dearly.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Catherine Matthews.
Family time was always very important to him and he looked forward to as many backyard gatherings as possible, while he had the strength to do so.
On behalf of the family, we would like to thank all of the doctors, nurses, and staff at Sharp and UCSD for all of their efforts and everything they did for Fred. He was truly grateful.
A special Thank You to all of you for the outpouring of love that you have shown all of us via calls, texts, emails, Facebook, cards, flowers, food, and your company. I can't thank you enough. You are all the best people, and we appreciate it all more than you could ever know.
Fred's celebration of life will take place on Thursday, October 22, 2026, from 1-2 pm in the chapel, followed by a light reception from 2-5 pm. Both events will take place at Eternal Hills Memorial Park, Mortuary and Cemetery, 1999 El Camino Real, Oceanside, CA 92054.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in his honor to the Kevin Cook Infusion Center at Sharp in San Diego. This is where Fred received most of his treatments. Please contact Sylvia Matthews for further information. Thank you.
