HERIBERTO A. LOZANO
March 16, 1929 – May 31, 2014
Heriberto (Ed) Lozano was born on March 16th, 1929 in Pacoima, California to Andres and Maria Lozano--both of Los Altos de Jalisco, Mexico. Ed was the youngest of seven children in the Lozano family.
Family and friends closest to him knew him as “Eddie”.
From his early beginnings, Eddie was a devoted son and brother; displaying unwavering allegiance to the entire family. Growing up on ranches into his teenage years, Eddie learned that hard work would be the key to success, which contributed to his humility, work ethic and belief in simplicity. These were traits Eddie would model throughout his life. Eddie consistently credited his mother for “teaching him right from wrong and making him strong”.
Eddie joined the United States Air Force in 1950, just ahead of the Korean War. He remained on active duty, ultimately achieving rank of Chief Master Sergeant, while proudly serving in the Air National Guard, 163rd Fighter Squadron. Ed Lozano was a military veteran, loyally serving his beloved country for over 35 years.
It was on a day in 1952 that Eddie would meet the love of his life, Bertha Gutierrez. After dating for a “short” three years, they were joined in marriage on November 26th, 1955. “Papa and Nana” celebrated their 58th Wedding Anniversary in November of 2013.
Eddie and Bertha were blessed with three children; Michelle (Greg) Holmquist, Brandon (Terrie) and Rozanne. He loved and adored his five grandchildren: Cristina, Ashleigh (AJ), Quinn, Alyssa, Ryan and one great grandchild, Cadence (“Papa’s Big Girl”), born in January of 2013.
Eddie and Bertha traveled to Alaska, Hawaii, Mexico, and such European countries as Spain, Portugal, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy. He and Bertha took their motor home to various states—including Utah, Arizona, Oregon, Texas, Washington, and New Mexico-- creating memories while enjoying the wonders of the United States.
“Strive not to be a success, but rather
to be of value.” (Albert Einstein)
Eddie embodied Albert Einstein’s words his entire life time. To those who had the opportunity to know him, Eddie would best be described as a very humble and quiet man. He was soft-spoken, semi-private, and a good friend to all. Serving relatives, neighbors, and friends brought him happiness and purpose.
Eddie was a "Renaissance Man”, doing a little bit of everything extremely well! Self-taught in many areas of his life; As a young man Eddie enjoyed boxing; he was a poet, sculptor, sportsman and overall craftsman. As a sportsman Eddie excelled, with his favorite past time being golf. He loved the game and during his retirement he could be found on the golf course several days a week. Eddie ultimately achieved every golfer’s dream—a hole-in-one! Eddie was also an avid fisherman, surf-fishing off the California coast in Oceanside, deep sea fishing and fresh water fishing over the years. Adding gardening to the list of “hobbies”, this allowed him to create outdoor settings for everyone to admire.
In 2003 Eddie received life changing news; he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. He dealt with his illness courageously and with grace. Being a man of few words, he never complained. He carried on with his life, activities and interests with dignity.
Eddie knew how to handle the hurdles in life—without compromising his character or integrity. His 85 years of life were devoted to his family; his parents and siblings, his life with Bertha and their children and to his grandchildren.
Although not his words, the great American essayist Mark Twain noted a philosophy that Eddie Lozano could say to all in his family:
Twenty years from now you
will be more disappointed by
the things you didn't do than
by the ones you did do. So throw
off the bowlines. Sail away from
the safe harbor. Catch the trade
winds in your sails. Explore.
Dream. Discover.
Eddie followed Mark Twain’s advice: He did them all. He explored, he dreamed, and he discovered. Eddie’s view of life was simple; he worked hard and loved others. He was a humble and gracious man, who learned to deal with adversity.
Heriberto (Eddie) Lozano’s virtues, values, and spirit will be missed. The world was a better place because of Eddie.
Let us say farewell to a wonderful man. He has been a good son, husband, father, and friend to all of us and he will be dearly missed. He will always be remembered for loving and caring for his family, always placing the needs and interests of others first. Eddie will forever remain in our hearts.
