Born on August 1, 1945 in Fort Lupton, Colorado, near Denver, Jim was the youngest child of Harumi and Kame Goto. After WWII in 1945, his family returned to California where he would grow up. His father taught him to be an outdoorsman and Jim earned his Eagle Scout Badge.
He graduated from the University of Arizona in Tucson and went on to become a Registered Pharmacist (RPh). Jim returned to Southern California, where he spent the next 50 years in the industry. Jim retired from his position as a pharmacist at CVS in 2018.
Jim was a lifelong world traveler through the US, Europe, Egypt, China, Nepal, and Central America. He enjoyed being well-dressed, listening to jazz, and reading a good book, preferably by a pool. He had a love for fast cars and owned a number of them that he cherished.
Jim married Sheryl Chicoine (Goto) in 1984 in San Diego, CA. From this union, his son Jeffrey (Jeff) was born in San Diego, CA.
Jim enjoyed coaching Jeff in youth baseball for eight years, from Tee Ball through “Pony” division for 13- to 14-year-olds. When Jeff took an interest in tennis, Jim enrolled him in tennis lessons, in turn rekindling his own love for the sport. Jim eventually accepted a position teaching tennis for the City of Carlsbad where he built many extraordinary friendships over the following 19 years.
Jim appreciated movies, music, and always looked forward to his annual tradition of Christmas and New Years in Cabo with his family.
Jim was a supportive friend and mentor who saw the potential in others and encouraged them to find fulfillment. He always found amusement in those he surrounded himself with, especially his two pugs Sarah and Butchey.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Sheryl Goto, his son Jeff Goto, and many other family members and friends who will miss him dearly. He was preceded in death by his mother Harumi Goto, and father, Kame Goto, and sister Amy Fujihara.
The memorial service and interment was held on August 27, 2024 at Eternal Hills Memorial Park Chapel in Oceanside, CA. Jim will be deeply missed but never forgotten. He loved the life he lived and lived the life he loved.
