Born in Long Island, New York, she graduated from Malverne High School. She later met and married John J. Barry, with whom she shared over 51 years of marriage.
For 28 years, Joan worked for the City of Oceanside, where she was known for her kindness, dedication, and steady presence. After retiring in 2005 she continued to do what she loved most—spending time with family and friends. Whether it was a simple gathering around the table, a holiday celebration, or just sitting and talking, Joan made people feel welcome, seen, and cared for.
She was preceded in death by her husband John, her sister Elizabeth (Frank) and parents, Arthur and Lillian Wanser.
Joan leaves behind her three children: Her daughter Debra and her husband David Rios, her daughter Diane Barry and her son, John J. Barry, Jr. and his wife Elizabeth, all of Oceanside. She is also survived by her six granddaughters, Christina Moi, Lani Miranda, Kayla Aano, Jessica Roderfeld, Melissa Rios and Tamara Ornelas, along with 14 great-grandchildren, who brought her endless joy. She will also be remembered by extended family and many friends in California, Arizona, and Massachusetts.
Joan was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She had a gentle way about her—a warmth that made people feel safe and loved. The love she gave so freely will continue to live on in all of us.
A celebration of her life will be held on January 17, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Coast City Church 420 N. El Camino Real, Oceanside, CA. 92058
