
Joan was born on August 27, 1922 in Dixmont, PA to her parents Alva and Ann Bowdle. She graduated from University of Pittsburgh with a master's degree. As part of her education, she studied and traveled abroad as a Fulbright scholar. She moved to California in the 1950'sand taught school in the Los Angeles area. She married her husband Richard Turnbull in 1959 in Whittier, CA. In the 1960's, they moved to Vista where Richard was a CPA and Joan taught French and Spanish for many years in the Oceanside Unified School District before retiring in 1987.
Joan was an active member of the Oceanside Presbyterian Church since 1962 and sang in the choir for many years. She enjoyed traveling and visited many countries in Europe and South America. She was active for many years in several organizations, including the American Association of University Women, Delta Kappa Gamma, and Rotary.
Joan is survived by nephews Tim Turnbull, Avondale, Arizona; Chris (Kathy) Turnbull, Pickerington, Ohio; Tony (Carol) Turnbull, Athens, Ohio; and niece Evelyn Turnbull, Austin, Texas; and many great and great-great nephews and nieces. She is preceded in death by her husband, Richard.
Joan will be buried at Eternal Hills Cemetery in Oceanside, CA. The family will honor Joan's life in a private service at a later date.
