John Manuel Anselmo, 77, of Carlsbad, passed away peacefully Friday February 20, 2014, with his family by his side.

John was born to the late Manuel and Elizabeth Anselmo on July 13, 1936 in Somerville, Massachusetts. After John’s father passed away at a young age, John worked very hard at odd jobs to help his family survive. On January 17, 1959, John Married Vila Noddin and they lived in several places before settling in Oceanside, California, where he resided for 41 years.

As soon as John was old enough, he joined the United States Marine Corps where he achieved the rank of E-7 Gunnery Sergeant over his 20 year career. John loved his country and fought hard to defend it. His career included one tour in Okinawa and 2 tours in Vietnam. After his retirement from the Marine Corps, John began his second career at La Costa Resort and Spa where he worked for another 20 years.

John worked hard his whole life to provide for and support his family. He enjoyed watching his children grow and play sports. He could be seen for several years at Oceanside High School Sporting events cheering on the Pirates. One of his favorite pastimes was a fantasy football league he has been a part of for over 35 years with Pam, sons, grandchildren, and the next generation of original members.

John is survived by his domestic partner Pam Hoffman, Vila Anselmo, his brother Francis Minahan and wife Jane of Springfield, Massachusetts, his sister Rita Pritchard and husband Stu of Roswell, New Mexico, his four children, Guy Anselmo and wife Myriam of Oceanside, Anthony Anselmo and wife Stephanie of Poteau, Oklahoma, Edward Anselmo and wife Stephanie of San Marcos, Lisa Anselmo and partner Darla Wagner of Kingwood, Texas, 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

A viewing will be held Thursday February 27th from 5-8 pm at Eternal Hills Mortuary in Oceanside. The funeral will be held Friday February 28th at 10:00am at Eternal Hills Chapel in Oceanside with burial to follow.

Dearest Pam:

It was with sadness and shock that I realize my immediate family is nearly gone. I will miss John very much. My deepest sympathy at this tragic time.

I was so pleased that you were with John at this time. I could see the love and devotion that you had for each other. It's going to be very difficult being without him. But, Pam, time will ease this somewhat.

I'm so thankful for the happy life he had with you Pam. I'm so happy to have met you and I love you. If I can do anything for you, please let me know.

Chin up honey and think of your wonderful life together. Please give the boys my thoughts, my love and my sympathy.

All my love,
