Born in India in 1943, he was the son of Radhashyam and Chitralekha (Dey) Roy. Dr. Roy received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in physics from Presidency College and the University of Calcutta, respectively, and was a national gold medal recipient. He then emigrated to the United States in 1967 and completed his Ph.D. in electrical engineering at Montana State University. He worked as an electrical engineer, first in Phoenix, AZ, then in San Diego, CA until his retirement.
Dr. Roy was a devout Hindu and a Sanskrit and Vedic scholar. He was also an accomplished writer of essays, stories, and plays. Dr. Roy was one of the founders of the Bengali cultural association in Phoenix as well as an original member of the San Diego association Saikat, and he is remembered fondly by their members.
Dr. Roy was a beloved husband of 53 years to his wife, Krishna (Mandal) Roy and a caring father to his daughters, Dr. Kaveri M. Roy (husband David Roberts) and Soma K. Roy, both of Massachusetts. He is also survived by his brother Prasanta Kumar Roy (wife Latika) of North Carolina, as well as many loving nieces, nephews, and cats.
Services will be privately held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either the ISKCON Temple of San Diego or to the San Diego Humane Society.
