Saddened by the passing of a good man. I'll always remember the poster that hung on one of his office walls during our days with 3/5. It pictured a huge Hippo, leaping out of the water, with mouth wide open and four long teeth about to latch onto an Elephants rear end. The caption read.....Been Chewed Out Lately?

Major Bentley was a terrific officer, and a great mentor. He was intelligent, steady, and spoke softly with penetrating insight and command. I served as a young Lt. with now major Curt Bruce, and echo his comments. I worked directly with Maj. Bentley to beat the support staff (a slight exaggeration) into shape for an IG's inspection, and his leadership and management were without parallel. 
God Bless him Requescat in Pace.

Major Bentley was the XO of 3/5 in 1964-1965 when LtCol Len Fribourg was the CO.  I joined the battalion in Jan '64 fresh out of TBS.  Here I was with a CO who had been in a Raider Battalion in WW II and who had been the technical advisor to Sands of Iwo Jima, Major Bentley who had flown off Guadalcanal, and Bn Sgt. Major Clinton Puckett, who had been awarded the Navy Cross in Korea. Pretty heady stuff for a FMF-fresh brown bar.  I remember Major Bentley as a patient and pleasant officer who always gave encouragement to us lieutenants.  Fair winds, following seas, and Semper Fidelis, Sir.
