

Margaret Joan Newlands, also lovingly known as Joanie and “Cookie”, passed to her heavenly home on May 19, 2017. She died at La Costa Glen, Carlsbad where she was lovingly cared for through the past seven years. She was born Margaret Joan Cook, December 26, 1931, the third of three children in Waterloo, New York to Margaret and Frank Cook. She graduated from Cortland State Teachers College in Cortland, New York in 1954 where she met and fell in love with her husband, Edward Newlands Jr. They were married on July 17, 1954 in New York and moved to Los Angeles, California with a 2 and a half year old son, Edward Newlands III. Their three daughters, Nancy, Sandy and Lisa were born in the San Fernando Valley over the next several years.
She was preceded in death by her mother -Margaret Cook, father - Frank Cook, sister – Nancy Ribler, brother – Harlan Cook and ex-husband Edward Newlands Jr.
Margaret had a love and talent for writing poetry, songs, parodies and stories with a wonderful sense of humor and razor sharp wit. She was a talented dancer and singer and music was a big part of her life. She was a Kindergarten teacher and collegiate lecturer, worked on government contracts at Systems Development Corporation, (SDC) supervising college Pell Grant administration and as a war game designer for the U.S. military. She was a fierce defender of those in need. She was generous, nurturing, funny, clever and capable of making anyone feel truly special.
She was a loving mother, grandmother and friend. Joan is survived by her children, Edward Newlands III, Nancy Byron, Sandy Jewett and Lisa Edmison. Grandchildren, Edward Joseph Newlands and wife Lee Newlands, Lindsey Byron, Emily Newlands, Casey Byron, Amy Byron, Connor Jewett, Jo Anna Edmison and Alyssa Edmison. Also by her sons and daughter-in-law, whom she loved as her own children – Lois Newlands, Joel Jewett and Robert Edmison.
Her funeral service will be held at St. Michael’s by-the-sea Episcopal Church, 2775 Carlsbad Blvd, Carlsbad, California 92008, May 31, 2017 at 1:00 pm. She will be laid to rest at 2:30 pm under direction of Eternal Hills Memorial Park Mortuary, 1999 S. El Camino Real, Oceanside, California, 92054.
