Maria was born and raised in the small coastal town of Pasacao in the Philipines. During the difficult years of World War II, she learned Nippongo and courageously served as an interpreter for her town.Through her efforts, she helped many local residents gain release after being arrested by occupying Japanese forces--a quiet heroism we will always remember.
While our father, Abraham Canonizado Sr., fought as a part-time guerrilla during the war, fate brought them together. They fell in love and were married shortly after the Armistice was declared. Together they built a family rooted in love, faith, and resilience. Our father passed away in December 25, 1984, but his memory lived on through her enduring strength and devotion.
Maria is survived by her ten adult children--Susan, Juliet, Abraham Jr., Romeo, Leah, Cynthia, Edgar, Ric, Arlene, and Cesar--as well as her 28 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren, all of whom were blessed by her unwavering love.
She was passionate about gardening--her plants were her joy and treasure. A woman of deep faith, she always led the family in prayer during special occasions, never failing to give thanks for God's abundant blessings. Her spirituality was the glue that held our family together.
Maria was a music lover. Her face would always light up with pride every time we sang, as if our voices were her greatest joy. She carried that look of quiet admiration that made us feel truly seen and loved
She found joy in simple pleasures--sewing in her younger years, playing cards with her adult children, and even joining them for outings to the casino. Her favorite song, "Beautiful Maria" was more than just a melody--it was a reflection of who she truly was: beautiful, inside and out.
She never took offense--always laughing along with us, even when the teasing was about her own lovable quirks. Her good-natured spirit made those moments even more special, filling our home with warmth and laughter.
Growing up, we saw her make daily sacrifices for us, always putting our needs before her own. In times of hardship, she clung tightly to her faith, drawing strength from God. She extended her compassion generously, especially to our less fortunate relatives, who all looked up to her as a source of comfort and support.
We will never forget our mother, Maria. Throughout our lives, she was our guiding light--leading by example, teaching us to live grace, strength, and kindness. Her legacy of love and faith will live on in all of us.
