She died peacefully at home, surrounded by her loving family. Nia is survived by her children: H. David Singh of Carlsbad, CA; Maya Eskridge of Edmond, OK; Krishna Singh of Carlsbad, CA; Indira Singh of
Irvine, CA; Priya Singh of Oceanside, CA; and Omar Singh of Fallbrook, CA; by her brothers
Armando, Antonio and Orlando; by her sisters Enedina, Cleotilde, Maria, Anita and Bertha; and
by her twelve grandchildren, Connor, Jaiden, Noah, Luca, Nathan, Isabella, Caysen, Aspyn, Zoe,
Lucy, Elijah and Ashton. She is preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Cleto and
Gaudencio, and her daughter Jehan.
Nia was born to Abdon and Maura Narciso Gomez on March 27, 1945 in Agua Zarca, Guerrero,
Mexico. She was one of eleven children. When she finished school, she worked as a nurse in a
doctor's office. She immigrated to California in her mid 20’s to help support her family in
Mexico. She met and married Harry Singh Jr. and together they had six children.
Nia was a devoted mother, sister, aunt and grandma. Her family was her pride and joy. She loved
raising her children and helping care for many of her nieces, nephews, and grandchildren. Over
the years, she developed many nicknames such as Grandma Ashe, Nina, Grandma Weazy, and
Roommate.
Nia loved music, singing, dancing and cooking. Anytime mariachi bands were present, she
would sing right along with them. She would often dance whether in her kitchen or out in public.
Family and friends always enjoyed her cooking, and she would frequently receive calls for
cooking advice or recipes. Nia worked for Nutrition Services for the Carlsbad School District for
nearly 20 years, preparing meals for up to 400 children a day. She enjoyed teaching others to
cook in person and by video. She also loved to travel. She enjoyed trips with her son, David, and
her nieces and nephews in the U.S. and around the world.
Nia demonstrated great faith, strength and courage through many of life’s circumstances. She
particularly handled her five year cancer battle with grace. She was an inspiration to all of those
around her and demonstrated that even in the most difficult moments in life, one should never
lose sight of what is most important: faith and family.
Nia was greatly loved and will be deeply missed. The family offers heartfelt thanks to all Nia’s
caregivers, medical providers, hospice team and family who cared for her so well. The family
appreciates all the kind and loving expressions of sympathy, condolences, support and prayers
during this time of loss.
