November 25, 1944 – August 31, 2026
Marvin C. “Rick” Norton, Jr., 81, passed away in Vista, California, leaving behind a life marked by service, intellectual curiosity, humor, and a genuine desire to help others.
Rick was born on November 25, 1944, in Charlotte, North Carolina, to Marvin Chancellor Norton and Eloise Shepherd Cooksey. His father was a Southern Baptist minister, and the church and music were important parts of Rick’s childhood. He grew up singing in the church choir and developed a lifelong love of music, particularly gospel music. His family later moved to Orange Park, Florida, where he spent much of his youth.
Soon after high school, Rick entered the military. His exceptional ability with languages led him to Indiana University, where he studied Russian and became a Russian-language interpreter during his four years of military service.
Rick later attended Florida State University, majoring in Russian literature and history, before earning his law degree from the University of Miami School of Law in 1979. He went on to practice law for 44 years, first in Florida and later in Oceanside, California. In 1997, he co-founded Norton & Grimes, building his practice around something deeply important to him—helping people.
Rick was known for keeping a bullet on his desk. He told prospective clients that complete honesty was essential, regardless of how difficult or embarrassing the truth might be. If Rick was going to represent them, they had to “bite the bullet” and tell him everything. It was a perfect reflection of Rick: sound advice delivered with his unmistakable sense of humor.
Outside the law, Rick’s great passion was bridge. He began playing while in the military and continued throughout his life. A devoted member of the American Contract Bridge League, Rick achieved the prestigious rank of Diamond Life Master in November 2017—an accomplishment he proudly said meant even more to him than earning his law degree. He also enjoyed beach volleyball and music and was known for his quick wit and wonderful sense of humor.
Rick married Shirley Norton on February 15, 1997, and together they shared nearly three decades of companionship, friendship, laughter, and love.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Shirley; his brother, David; his sister, Judy; and family and friends whose lives were enriched by knowing him. He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Ann.
His presence will be deeply missed, but the wisdom, laughter, love, and memories he leaves behind will endure in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
