Beloved wife, mother, grandmother & great grandmother passed away Sunday, January 10, 2021. She was 90 years old.
She was born in Winston Salem, North Carolina. Mary Lou enjoyed life and had many interests. She was a Phi Beta Kappa from Wake Forest University where she met and fell in love with Bill Hartley. Together they traveled to Southern California where they took up residence in Oceanside, for the last 67 years, and raised a family.
She was a beloved schoolteacher in the Carlsbad and Oceanside school district for 35+ years teaching typing, shorthand, English & Physical Education.
She loved to be outside and share in many activities. Golf and tennis were her great passions, but she also enjoyed surfing, reading, writing, dancing, yoga, jogging, horseback riding, fellowship, and staying busy.
She was the El Camino Ladies Club Champion in Golf and had many friends there. She was also a longtime member of Oceanside Baptist Church.
Mary Lou demonstrated her beautiful faith in all that she said and did and is fondly remembered for teaching here children about the lord.
She cherished her husband Bill and family and celebrated 68 year of marriage! She was deeply loved and will be missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her husband Bill and was preceded in death by her mother, Martha Harris, and father, Joseph Johnson Harris of Winston Salem, NC.
A celebration of life ceremony will be held at a later date, post COVID. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Alzheimer's Association (www.act.alz.org/donate).
