Mavis Marie Hossack Bonus, a radiant soul born on April 23, 1937, in Detroit, MI, peacefully passed away on September 21, 2023, at the age of 86. Mavis's warm heart and infectious happiness endeared her to her family and community alike. She leaves behind a legacy of resilience and determination that inspired all who knew her.
Mavis embarked on her educational journey with unwavering dedication, earning her four-year teaching degree in two and half years at Arizona State University, while also being a young wife and mother of two children. Upon graduation, the family moved to Oceanside, California to begin her exciting career as an elementary school teacher from 1961 to 1995. Her impact on the lives of countless students extended far beyond the classroom walls. Many of her students still kept in contact with her forty years later.
On Feb 21, 1970, after seven years as a single mother, Mavis married Dr. Archie Bonus, a well-known Optometrist and the love of her life. They spent 23 devoted years together until his passing in 1993.
In 1995, Mavis began a new chapter as a self-employed mobile dog groomer, proudly operating her Bubble and Bows dog grooming business for an astonishing 25 years, retiring at the remarkable age of 83. Her work ethic and commitment were a testament to her indomitable spirit.
During her final years, Mavis faced the challenges of vascular dementia with remarkable grace. She received dedicated care at Oakmont of Orange, close to her daughter Debbie's home. Debbie's daily visits, complete with lovingly prepared home-cooked meals and treats, brought comfort and joy to Mavis in her time of need. Her unwavering sweetness and positivity continued to shine, even as she battled her illness.
Mavis's memory will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her effervescent and joyful spirit will forever be a source of inspiration and comfort.
Mavis is survived by her beloved daughter, Debbie Pratto, her devoted son-in-law, John Pratto, her loving stepson, Ken Bonus, her younger brother, Michael McDermott, her cherished granddaughters, Amy Whitson and Jenny Whitson, and her great-grandchildren, Alyssa Klemme, Robby Klemme, and Jackson Whitson. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mavis and Bill McDermott, William Carey Hossack, her brother, Robert McDermott, and her son Rick James.
