Modesta Moedano Mendiola, age 66, of Vista, CA, passed away in her home peacefully with her loving family by her side in the early morning hours on Saturday, June 16th, 2018. Modesta was born on February 25th, 1952 in Pachuca, Hidalgo, Mexico. She married her late husband Roy Mendiola on July 19th, 1972 at the San Luis Rey Mission and they remained married until his death in June 2009.
Modesta was the loving mother of her and Roy’s eldest child, Roy Bazan Mendiola, who passed away in February 2012. She is survived by her children: Germain Mendiola, Angela Castillo, Cindy Mendiola, and Wendy Mendiola; her grandchildren: Roy Paul Mendiola, Lily Mendiola, Angelica Mendiola, Germain Mendiola, Julia Orozco, Joel Mendiola, Anthony Mendiola, Aliyah Mendiola, Angel Mendiola, Shelby Castillo, Emma Castillo, Brenda Guzman, Leonardo Sanchez; and her great-grandchildren: Johnathan Alvarez, Elliana Guzman and Brody Guzman.
Modesta first made her way to the United States on September 24th, 1966, residing in the North County San Diego area. She lived in central San Diego and Tijuana for a short time, before she moved back to Vista, CA where she established roots and resided for the remainder of her life. Modesta worked in a variety of industries throughout her life, most notably she spent 18 years working at Hot Springs Spa Watkins Manufacturing.
The one thing that Modesta knew how to do was to make the most out of everything in life. She lived her life to the fullest capacity and never slowed down. She thrived on spending time with her family and friends, and she traveled all over making memories. But most of all, she treasured the relationships and friendships that she made. She gave so much and asked for so little in return.
She loved all of God’s creatures; it went beyond people. She loved every animal, every plant. When she was outside, she was home. In her garden she made things grow from her nurturing spirit, love, and affection. Her home was filled with life. It wasn’t uncommon for people to bring her injured animals, knowing that she would nurture them back to life.
She relied on her strong will to live, her unwavering faith in God, and the love and prayer of her family, friends and many supporters, during her fight with cancer. Yet even throughout her own struggle with cancer, she reached out to others in many ways, providing endless support and love, always putting others before herself. When life may not have been easy she didn’t let that diminish her spirit, she was always vibrant and chose to see the beauty in everything. She possessed a contagious sense of humor and kindness that won the hearts of many. She was the kindest person. Her gift of nurturing, love, and joy, shown through her smile and embrace, will never be forgotten. She will forever be loved and missed.
