Naomi Dixon, born Naomi Steidley in Muskogee, OK on November 5th, 1911 was known as a delightful, caring, thoughtful and considerate person by all that have been graced with her presence. Daily life for Naomi was filled with kindness, respect, grace, and love until her very last day here on Earth. She was always genuine and true to herself and others.
Less than two months shy of 100, Naomi fulfilled a life most all of us can only try to aspire to. Angelic and true in nature, she surrounded herself with beauty and enchantment and created it where it did not exist. Winged Angels embodied her home and her spirit throughout her life and now in death. And though her vessel can no longer carry this beautiful person further through life on Earth, her spirit and memory will continue to touch each and every life that came to know her.
Naomi moved to Long Beach at the age of 6 and graduated from High School in 1929. She met Vince Dixon in 1930. They wed in 1933. She gave birth to two sons before moving to Oceanside in 1941, and then to a third son after establishing residency in Oceanside. Fond memories with Vince would resonate long after his death in 1969. She continued to stay actively involved and committed to her family, friends, and her community. Naomi remarried in 1988 to Maury Hornsby. They spent many wonderful years together until his passing in 2005. Even through her own personal losses (at the age of 99, there were many), Naomi’s heart of gold remained forever thoughtful, caring, and giving.
Naomi enjoyed many activities and remained consistent in her endeavors including her involvement with the Oceanside Girls Athletic Club, The Emblem Club, The Elks Lodge, Dixon Ford, Socials, Dominoes and Bridge with friends, Dancing, and more. She loved spending time with her friends and family, looked forward to getting her hair done every Friday (even the Friday before our loss), visiting her brother Paul, Oceans Eleven luncheons, and evenings out at the Elks just to name a few.
Living through 18 presidencies, Naomi had seen more and experienced more change than most of her peers could imagine. Her mind was just as sharp as ever at the resting age of 99. That in itself remains remarkably Naomi. Let us not forget that she visited her 96 year old brother Paul just 7 days before she left us. She spoke to, and genuinely acknowledged all of those who visited her in the final hours before her eternal sleep. Never loosing dignity or grace, even through the trials of her death was, and is Naomi.
She is survived by her brother, three sons, 7 grand children, 10 great-grand children, and many, many dear friends and extended family that will cherish her memory indefinitely.
We will forever cherish Naomi’s memorable departure on Sept 8th, 2011 when her lifting spirit on angel’s wings gifted us a “lights out” night in San Diego. Many of her acquaintances’ lights returned to power within minutes of her passing; once again blessing, gracing and reminding us of how dynamically she touched our lives.
What a memorable lady you are Naomi…. Cherished forever. How blessed we all have been to know you… You lived the fullest life…. We all aspire to that which you have encompassed… May we all remember you Naomi for all that you were and will always be…. May we all reflect upon and learn from your love and kindness. You were an angel in this life and you remain an angel among angels in your life hereafter. We Love you Naomi…. Now and Forever…
With Love and Loss,
Gretchen Lane, Honored Grand Daughter to Naomi Dixon
